Blockage of adult development by brain removal and its resumption by application of the prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) were studied using pupae of a racial hybrid J-122 × C-115 of Bombyx mori. A log-linear dose-response relationship was obrained after injection of a PTTH solution. The Bombyx-unit of PTTH has been defined from this dose-response curve.

Article Synopsis
  • - The neuropeptide prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) regulates ecdysone synthesis critical for insect metamorphosis, while pyriproxyfen, a juvenile hormone analogue, disrupts this process in silkworms.
  • - RNA-seq analysis revealed 3,774 differentially expressed genes in the prothoracic gland after pyriproxyfen exposure, primarily affecting the MAPK signaling pathway linked to PTTH.
  • - Increased PTTH levels were observed, but downstream signaling genes (like torso and ERK) were down-regulated, indicating that pyriproxyfen interferes with metamorphosis by impairing PTTH-Torso signaling.

Neuronal and endocrine mechanisms underlying the circadian gating of eclosion: insights from Drosophila.

The circadian rhythm of adult emergence (aka eclosion) of the fruit fly Drosophila is a classic behavioural read-out that served in the first characterisation of the key features of circadian clocks and was also used for the identification of the first clock genes. Rhythmic eclosion requires the central clock in the brain, as well as a peripheral clock in the steroidogenic prothoracic gland. Here, we review recent findings on the timing and neuroendocrine coupling mechanisms of the two clocks.

A Neuropeptide Signaling Network That Regulates Developmental Timing and Systemic Growth in Drosophila.

Animals sense chemical cues such as nutritious and noxious stimuli through the chemosensory system and adapt their behavior, physiology, and developmental schedule to the environment. In the Drosophila central nervous system, chemosensory interneurons that produce neuropeptides called Hugin (Hug) peptides receive signals from gustatory receptor neurons and regulate feeding behavior. Because Hug neurons project their axons to the higher brain region within the protocerebrum where dendrites of multiple neurons producing developmentally important neuropeptides are extended, it has been postulated that Hug neurons regulate development through the neuroendocrine system.

The European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) is an agricultural pest and burgeoning model for research on speciation, seasonal adaptation and insect resistance management. Although previous work in O. nubilalis has identified genes associated with differences in life cycle, reproduction, and resistance to Bt toxins, the general lack of a robust gene-editing protocol for O.

Female sexual receptivity is essential for reproduction of a species. Neuropeptides play the main role in regulating female receptivity. However, whether neuropeptides regulate female sexual receptivity during the neurodevelopment is unknown.
