Objectives: To survey the development status and actual needs of virtual autopsy technology in China and to clarify the applicability of forensic virtual autopsy laboratory accreditation.

Methods: The questionnaire was set up included three aspects:(1) the current status of virtual autopsy technology development; (2) the accreditation elements such as personnel, equipment, entrustment and acceptance, methods, environmental facilities; (3) the needs and suggestions of practicing institutions. A total of 130 forensic pathology institutions were surveyed by online participation through the Questionnaire Star platform.

Results: Among the 130 institutions, 43.08% were familiar with the characteristics of virtual autopsy technology, 35.38% conducted or received training in virtual autopsy, and 70.77% have establishment needs (including maintenance). Relevant elements were suitable for laboratory accreditation.

Conclusions: Virtual autopsy identification has gained social recognition. There is a demand for accreditation of forensic virtual autopsy laboratory. After the preliminary assessment, considering the characteristics and current situation of this technology, China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) can first carry out the accreditation pilot of virtual autopsy project at large comprehensive forensic institutions with higher identification capability, and then CNAS can popularize the accreditation in a wide range when the conditions are suitable.

Objectives: Skeletal indicators of developmental stress are commonly used to assess health, disease, and patterns of morbidity and mortality in past populations. Incorporating information about individual life history, such as adverse life events, allows for a more thorough understanding of their etiology. This paper adopts the double lens of ontogeny and the life course to analyze indicators of developmental stress in relation to known individual pathologies and developmental patterns of the cranium, vertebrae, and long bones.

Systematic review: oral and maxillofacial radiology as fundamental methods of virtual autopsy.

Forensic Sci Res

September 2023

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology-Forensic Odontology, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung, Indonesia.

Article Synopsis
  • Refusal of autopsy can happen for reasons like religious beliefs and concerns about diseases, prompting interest in alternative methods like virtual forensic odontological autopsy.
  • The study systematically reviewed literature from December 2021 to October 2022 to assess the use of oral and maxillofacial radiology as a non-invasive technique for virtual autopsy.
  • Four main imaging techniques were identified for virtual autopsy in forensic odontology, including CT scanning (multidetector CT), cone beam CT, and magnetic resonance imaging, each with unique benefits.

Virtual anatomical atlas of the deep brain nuclei.

Neurosurg Rev

November 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Yeditepe University, School of Medicine Kosuyolu Hospital, Kosuyolu Street, Kadıkoy, İstanbul, 34718, Türkiye.

This study aims to improve understanding of the anatomy of the deep brain nuclei relevant to deep brain stimulation as well as stereotactic lesioning procedures, including radio frequency, high-focused ultrasound, and radiosurgery. We created interactive, three-dimensional virtual models from cadaveric dissections and radiological segmentation. We used five brain specimens (ten hemispheres) obtained from routine autopsies, prepared according to Klingler's method.
