The hemodynamic response during the transition from the supine to standing position in idiopathic atrial fibrillation (AF) patients is not completely understood. This study aimed to analyze the hemodynamic changes that occur during the head-up tilt test in idiopathic AF patients. We investigated the hemodynamic changes during the head-up tilt test with impedance cardiography in 40 AF patients (12 with AF rhythm-AFr and 28 with sinus rhythm-AFsr) and 38 non-AF controls.

The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the discriminating power of spirometric and plethysmographic lung function parameters to differenciate the diagnosis of asthma, ACO, COPD, and to define functional characteristics for more precise classification of obstructive lung diseases. From the databases of 4 centers, a total of 756 lung function tests (194 healthy subjects, 175 with asthma, 71 with ACO, 78 with COPD and 238 with CF) were collected, and gradients among combinations of target parameters from spirometry (forced expiratory volume one second: FEV1; FEV1/forced vital capacity: FEV1/FVC; forced expiratory flow between 25-75% FVC: FEF25-75), and plethysmography (effective, resistive airway resistance: sReff; aerodynamic work of breathing at rest: sWOB), separately for in- and expiration (sReffIN, sReffEX, sWOBin, sWOBex) as well as static lung volumes (total lung capacity: TLC; functional residual capacity: FRCpleth; residual volume: RV), the control of breathing (mouth occlusion pressure: P0.1; mean inspiratory flow: VT/TI; the inspiratory to total time ratio: TI/Ttot) and the inspiratory impedance (Zinpleth = P0.

Purpose: Peripheral artery disease causes severe morbidity, especially in diabetics and the elderly. There is a need for accurate noninvasive detection of peripheral arterial stenosis. The study has tested the hypothesis that arterial stenosis and the associated adaptation of the downstream circulation yield characteristic changes in the leg perfusion dynamics that enable early diagnosis, utilizing impedance plethysmography.

Comparing Body Composition Methods for Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps Cadets.

Mil Med

January 2024

United States Air Force, McConnell Air Force Base, Wichita, KS 67221, USA.

Introduction: In special populations, such as Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) cadets, body composition is used not only as a predictor of fitness but for additional purposes such as qualification for enlistment, load carriage, and duty fulfillment. Body mass index (BMI) is the initial measurement recorded and is considered a representation of health and physical performance capabilities. Personnel exceeding threshold values of body weight based upon their height measurement are typically further evaluated using a circumference-based method that predicts the cadets' percent body fat.

Background: Arterial hypertension (AH) that accompanies acromegaly (AC) may lead to cardiovascular dysfunction. Such consequences may be detected with impedance cardiography (ICG), which is a noninvasive method of hemodynamic assessment. Early detection of subclinical hemodynamic alterations in AC patients may be crucial for optimizing treatment and preventing cardiovascular remodeling.
