Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are particularly effective in promoting cartilage regeneration due to their immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and regenerative repair functions of tissues and organs. Meanwhile, the intra-articular delivery and synergy with other therapeutic drugs have been the key issues driving their further application. We report a mussel-inspired multifunctional hydrogel system, which could achieve co-delivery and synergism effect of MSC-derived exosomes (Exos) with icariin (ICA). The ICA and Exos co-delivered articular cavity injection system are expected to retain in the joint cavity and promote cartilage regeneration, due to the thermosensitive, self-healing and adhesion properties of the mussel-inspired multifunctional hydrogel. The experimental results proved that Exos enhanced the cellular uptake of ICA by more than 2-fold evenly, and the synergism of Exos and ICA efficiently improve the cell proliferation and migration. After synergic treatment, the content of matrix metalloproteinase 13 in the supernatant and intracellular decreased by 47% and 59%, respectively. study, ICA-loaded Exos exhibited prolonged retention behavior by multifunctional hydrogel delivery, thus displayed an increased cartilage protection. In the model of osteoarthritis, co-delivery hydrogel system relieved the cartilage recession, ensuring appropriate cartilage thickness.

Conductive organohydrogel fibers based on sodium alginate (SA) exhibit remarkable flexibility and electrical conductivity, making them ideal candidates for conformal skin adhesion and real-time monitoring of human activity signals. However, traditional conductive hydrogels often suffer from issues such as uneven distribution of conductive fillers, and achieving the integration of high mechanical strength, stretchability, and transparency using environmentally friendly methods remains a significant challenge. In this study, a novel and sustainable strategy was developed to fabricate dual-network organohydrogel fibers using sodium alginate as the primary material.

Critical-sized bone defects in osteosarcoma treatment demand multifunctional scaffolds that must effectively integrate two key functions, promoting osteogenesis and delivering targeted chemoprevention. This study introduces a dual-component system featuring pH-responsive hydrogels and hydroxyapatite-based fiber-reinforced biomimetic scaffolds designed for controlled and localized curcumin delivery, while addressing its solubility and stability issues. The hydrogel system comprises a double network of polyacrylic acid, sodium alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, and potato starch, specifically modified to encapsulate curcumin.

Ionic conductive hydrogels (ICHs) are emerging as key materials for advanced human-machine interactions and health monitoring systems due to their unique combination of flexibility, biocompatibility, and electrical conductivity. However, a major challenge remains in developing ICHs that simultaneously exhibit high ionic conductivity, self-healing, and strong adhesion, particularly under extreme low-temperature conditions. In this study, a novel ICH composed of sulfobetaine methacrylate, methacrylic acid, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers, sodium alginate, and lithium chloride is presented.

The complexation of nucleic acids and collagen forms a platform biomaterial greater than the sum of its parts. This union of biomacromolecules merges the extracellular matrix functionality of collagen with the designable bioactivity of nucleic acids, enabling advances in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, gene delivery, and targeted therapy. This review traces the historical foundations and critical applications of DNA-collagen complexes and highlights their capabilities, demonstrating them as biocompatible, bioactive, and tunable platform materials.
