A CMC--poly(AA--AMPS)/FeO hydrogel nanocomposite was successfully designed and prepared graft copolymerization of AA and AMPS on CMC followed by the cross-linking addition of FeCl/FeCl. The synthesized hydrogel nanocomposite was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, elemental mapping, thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The CMC--poly(AA--AMPS)/FeO hydrogel nanocomposite was employed as a biocompatible catalyst for the green synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) derivatives under thermal and ultrasound-assisted reaction conditions. High efficiency, low catalyst loadings, short reaction time, frequent catalyst recovery, environmental compatibility and mild conditions were found in both methods.

The medical and cosmetic industries have developed in recent years, there has been a growing demand for new materials. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and chitosan (CS) have been known and used for many years. Unfortunately, despite their numerous advantages and possible applications, such materials may possess certain disadvantages and limitations that constitute a problem in medical or cosmetic applications.

In three-dimensional (3D)-printed tissue models, sensitive, noninvasive techniques are required to detect changes in hydrogel structure caused by cellular remodeling. We demonstrate herein that circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy provides a reliable method for detecting hydrogel structural variations. We probe directly the plasmonic optical activity of chiral gold nanorods (c-AuNRs) embedded within the hydrogel matrix, in response to variations in the local environment.

Biomass valorization and bio-based material development are of major research interest following the spirit of the circular economy. Aloe vera cultivation is a widespread agricultural activity oriented toward supplement production because of its well-known antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Aloe vera juice production also produces a large amount of biomass byproducts that are usually landfilled.

This study introduces a novel chitosan/graphene oxide (CS/GO) nanocomposite hydrogel designed for the sustained release of levofloxacin. The hydrogel was synthesized using electrostatic interactions and chemical cross-linking, resulting in significant mechanical reinforcement (G' = 0.94 MPa, G" = 0.
