Citrinin was given to rabbits as a single oral dose of 120 or 67 mg/kg. Rabbits were killed at 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 hours post dosing, and the kidneys were fixed by intravascular perfusion. Ultrastructural alterations were evident by 4 hours after treatment. In the proximal tubule, alterations were brush border disruption, cytoplasmic rarefaction, and swelling of interdigitating processes. At higher doses, mitochondria were condensed and distorted. Medullary and straight cortical distal tubules had marked distention of the intercellular spaces and disorganization of interdigitating processes. Changes in cortical and outer medullary collecting ducts were similar but less severe. Renal alterations were suggestive of damage to membrane structure and/or transport functions and interference with cellular bioenergetics. Leukocytic infiltration was associated with damaged tubules indicating a contribution of inflammation to the development of the lesions.

Introduction: The autoantibody-driven disease pemphigus vulgaris (PV) impairs desmosome adhesion in the epidermis. In desmosomes, the pemphigus autoantigens desmoglein 1 (Dsg1) and Dsg3 link adjacent cells. Dsgs are clustered by plaque proteins and linked to the keratin cytoskeleton by desmoplakin (Dp).

The nitrate pollution has become an increasingly serious environmental problem worldwide, and the toxic effects of elevated nitrate levels in the environment on aquatic animals remain to be elucidated. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the mechanisms of liver injury to tadpoles after exposure to nitrate from embryonic to metamorphic climax and to assess the recovery process of liver function after cessation of exposure. In the group with continuous nitrate exposure, the livers and thyroid of tadpoles showed remarkably histological lesions, of this with structural disorganization of the hepatocytes, cellular atrophy, and fibrosis, as well as significant reduction in the follicular and colloidal area of the thyroid.

Background: The therapeutic armamentarium for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains notably constrained. A factor contributing to this problem could be the scarcity of in vitro models for HFpEF, which hinders progress in developing new therapeutic strategies. Here, we aimed at developing a novel, comorbidity-inspired, human, in vitro model for HFpEF.

In the context of climate changing environments, microalgae can be excellent organisms to understand molecular mechanisms that activate survival strategies under stress. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii signalling mutants are extremely useful to decipher which strategies photosynthetic organisms use to cope with changeable environments. The mutant vip1-1 has an altered profile of pyroinositol polyphosphates (PP-InsPs), which are signalling molecules present in all eukaryotes and have been connected to P signalling in other organisms including plants, but their implications in other nutrient signalling are still under evaluation.

Male infertility is a multifactorial condition for which the underlying causes frequently remain undefined. Genetic factors have long been associated with male fertility. However, many of them are poorly or not at all characterized and their biological functions are unknown.
