The Anammox and Sulfate Reduction Ammonium Oxidation processes were compared in two granular sequencing batch reactors operated for 160 days under anammox conditions. It was hypothesized that increasing the concentration of SO may positively influence the rate of N removal under anaerobic conditions and it was tested whether SO reduction and anammox occur independently or are related to each other. The cooperation of N-S cycles by increasing the concentration of influent SO to 952 mg S/L in the second reactor, a higher ammonium utilization rate and sulfate utilization rate was achieved compared to the first reactor, i.e., 2.1-fold and 15-fold, respectively. Nitrosomonas played the dominant role in the N metabolism, while Thauera - in the S metabolism. This study highlights the benefits of linking the N-S cycles as an effective approach for the treatment of NH and SO - rich wastewater, including lower substrate removal cost and reduced energy consumption.

Pain is a frequent and disturbing symptom among hemodialysis patients. Protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) are related to cardiovascular and overall mortality, and they are difficult to remove with current hemodialysis treatments. The PBUT displacers, such as furosemide, tryptophan, or ibuprofen, may be promising new strategies for improving their clearance.

Sulphated polysaccharides (SPs) are negatively charged compounds found in the cell wall of seaweeds or marine macro algae. These compounds exhibit a range of pharmacological activities, including anti-obesity effects. The aim of this systematic review as well as meta-analysis was to assess the potentials of seaweed-derived SPs to mitigate obesity through a systematic review and meta-analysis of animal model-based studies.

A novel detection technique is introduced that offers sensitive and reliable ochratoxin A (OTA) detection. The method leverages the etching of gold nanorods (AuNRs) stabilized by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) using the oxidized form of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl benzidine sulfate (TMB), creating a susceptible multicolor visual detection system for OTA. The visual detection is enabled by Mg-assisted DNAzyme catalysis combined with the catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) signal amplification strategy.

The sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB)-induced ferrihydrite transformation is an important cause for arsenic (As) contamination in the aquifer near mining area. Calcium carbonate (CaCO) is widespread and has the potential of regulating As fate directly or indirectly. However, the influence of CaCO on ferrihydrite transformation and the associated As mobilization/redistribution in SRB-containing environments remains unclear.

Taking a sewage treatment plant in Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, as an example, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated in the sewage treatment system were calculated using the carbon balance method and the emission factor method. The environmental impacts and economic aspects of different treatment units in wastewater treatment plants were analyzed using life cycle assessment, cost-benefit analysis, and data envelopment analysis models, and emission reduction pathways were proposed. The results indicated that the total GHG emissions (in terms of CO) from a certain municipal wastewater treatment plant in Suzhou were 6 653.
