Article Abstract
Metal artifacts produce incorrect Hounsfield units and impact treatment planning accuracy. This work evaluates the use of single-energy metal artifact reduction (SEMAR) algorithm for treatment planning by comparison to manual artifact overriding. CT datasets of in-house 3D-printed spine and pelvic phantoms with and without metal insert(s) and two treated patients with metal implants were analysed. CT number accuracy improved with the use of SEMAR filter: root mean square deviation (RMSD) from reference (without metal) reduced by 35.4 in spine and 98.8 in hip. The plan dose volume histograms (DVHs) and dosimetric measurements showed comparable results. SEMAR reconstruction improved planning efficiency.

Purpose: To compare the quality of deep learning image reconstructed (DLIR) virtual monochromatic images (VMI) and material density (MD) iodine images from dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) for the evaluation of head and neck neoplasms with CT scans from a conventional single-energy protocol.
Method: A total of 294 head and neck CT scans (98 VMIs operated at 60 keV, 102 MD iodine images, and 94 images from a 120 kVp single-energy CT (SECT) protocol) were retrospectively evaluated. VMIs and MD iodine images were generated using the Gemstone Spectral Imaging (GSI) mode using DLIR and metal artifact reduction (MAR) algorithms.

Objectives: To assess the metal artifact reductions of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) high-energy virtual monochromatic images (VMI) combined with the single energy metal artifact reduction (SEMER) (CANON MEDICAL SYSTEMS, Otawara, Japan) processing techniques for iodine (I)-125 seed identification in postimplant computed tomography (CT) after prostate brachytherapy.
Methods: Dual-energy acquisition with fast tube voltage switching was performed on a prostate phantom with simulated seeds and six clinical cases treated with I-125 prostate brachytherapy. The images were retrospectively reconstructed at VMI energy levels of 65-200 keV and with and without SEMAR (SEMAR and non-SEMAR images).

Cone-beam CT imaging using non-circular orbits has been demonstrated to be effective in reducing artifacts around metal. With the increasing interest in spectral imaging in the interventional suite, there are potential advantages to combine both technologies to yield further image quality benefits. We simulated a neuro-interventional application where imaging around the embolization is challenged by metal artifacts and the differentiation of bleeds and contrast extravasation is difficult with single-energy imaging.

: The electrodes of implantable cardiac devices (ICDs) may cause significant problems in cardiac computed tomography (CT) because they are a source of artifacts that obscure surrounding structures and possible pathology. There are a few million patients currently with ICDs, and some of these patients will require cardiac imaging due to coronary artery disease or problems with ICDs. Modern CT scanners can reduce some of the metal artifacts because of MAR software, but in some vendors, it does not work with ECG gating.
