Article Abstract

Epilepsy is a common and devastating neurological disease. Its treatment, especially when using phenobarbital, causes liver complications, and it is therefore essential to identify a way to reduce liver complications. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of ursodeoxycholic acid on liver function in pediatric patients with seizure treated with phenobarbital. Materials and methods: The present study was conducted on 80 patients (40 in the placebo group and 40 in the ursodeoxycholic acid group). To assess the effect of intervention, liver enzyme levels after five weeks of treatment were recorded. Independent t-test and ANOVA repeated measures were used to compare the means. The study results showed that the administration of ursodeoxycholic acid had a relative effect in improving liver function in patients with liver injury caused by phenobarbital.

Background: In this study, we aimed to investigate whether ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) would reduce the necessity of cholecystectomy in patients diagnosed with asymptomatic gallstones after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and in patients diagnosed with asymptomatic gallstones before LSG.

Methods: Between July 2020 and November 2022, at least 2-year follow-ups of patients who underwent LSG for obesity were retrospectively analyzed. Patients with pre-existing asymptomatic gallstones during preoperative evaluation, those with UDCA treatment (group 1), and observation group (group 2).

Unlabelled: Omadacycline, an aminomethylcycline tetracycline, has a low propensity to cause infection (CDI) in clinical trials. Omadacycline exhibited a reduced bactericidal effect compared with vancomycin on key microorganisms implicated in bile acid homeostasis and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), key components of CDI pathogenesis. The purpose of this study was to assess bile acid and SCFA changes in stool samples from healthy volunteers given omadacycline or vancomycin.

Rationale: Warfarin is the most commonly used drug in patients with mechanical valve replacement. Acute liver damage after warfarin is rare but potentially harmful. We present a case of warfarin-induced gastrointestinal bleeding with liver injury, pharmacy monitoring, and its therapy.

Objectives: HSD3B7 deficiency is a genetic disorder caused by mutations in the gene, leading to impaired bile acid synthesis and the accumulation of toxic intermediates. Affected patients typically present with cholestatic liver disease, including jaundice and progressive liver dysfunction.

Case Presentation: This case series describes three pediatric patients from two families diagnosed with HSD3B7 deficiency, each demonstrating varying clinical severity and outcomes.
