In order to generate a high-performance personalized biological fixation plate with matching mechanical properties and biocompatibility, reverse reconstruction and fracture reduction of a femur were performed by combining reverse and forward approaches, and the surface was extracted according to the installation position of the plate to complete plate modeling by shifting, thickening, and performing other operations. Subsequently, topology optimization and three-dimensional (3D) printing were performed, and the properties of the manufactured plate were probed. The results showed that the maximum displacement of the plate was 4.13 mm near the femoral head, the maximum stress was 5.15e MPa on both sides of the plate across its entire length, and the stress concentration decreased following topology optimization. The plate with optimized topology and filled with porous structure has a good filling effect. The final mass of the H-shaped plate was 12.05 g, while that of the B-shaped plate was 11.05 g, which dropped by 20.93% and 27.49%, respectively, compared with the original plate. The surface of the 3D-printed plate was bright and new, with a clear pore structure and good lap joint. The B-shaped and H-shaped plates were closely dovetailed with the host bone, which met the assembly requirements. This lays a foundation for the direct application of a high-performance personalized biological fixation plate.

The return of stagnant slab recorded by intraplate volcanism.

Subducted plates often stagnate in the mantle transition zone (MTZ), and the fate of the stagnant slabs is still debatable. They may sink into the lower mantle, or remain partially trapped in the MTZ, but it is uncertain whether they can return to the upper mantle. We report geochemical evidence of late-Miocene (~6 Ma) basalts from, and upper mantle seismic evidence beneath Shuangyashan, an area above the slab tear of the stagnant Pacific plate in eastern Asia, to show how the slab returns to the upper mantle from the MTZ.

Dual-Anion-Rich Polymer Electrolytes for High-Voltage Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Department of Physics, JC STEM Lab of Energy and Materials Physics, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong 999077, P. R. China.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are promising candidates for lithium metal batteries (LMBs) owing to their safety features and compatibility with lithium metal anodes. However, the inferior ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability of SPEs hinder their application in high-voltage solid-state LMBs (HVSSLMBs). Here, a strategy is proposed to develop a dual-anion-rich solvation structure by implementing ferroelectric barium titanate (BTO) nanoparticles (NPs) and dual lithium salts into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based SPEs for HVSSLMBs.

This study aimed to develop a novel reconstruction method for segmental mandibulectomy. In the authors' opinion, reconstruction of the anterior border of the mandibular ramus using a double-arm vascularized fibular flap is important to prevent deformity due to buccal depression and the accumulation of food debris, thereby eliminating masticatory dead space that cannot be filled with prostheses such as implants or dentures. Using conventional reconstruction plates, the reconstructed bone positioned at the anterior border of the mandibular ramus required either fixing with only 1 screw or using 2 plates for stable fixation, making it difficult to position the plates stably.

A key question in the planetary sciences centers on the divergence between the sibling planets, Venus and Earth. Venus currently does not operate with plate tectonics, and its thick atmosphere has led to extreme greenhouse conditions. It is unknown if this state was set primordially or if Venus was once more Earth-like.
