NHSN total IV antimicrobial start rates for patients on hemodialysis decreased from 2016 to 2020, but rates unsupported by NHSN surveillance documentation did not. There were 80% of reporting hemodialysis facilities that had ≥1 unsupported IV antimicrobial start, and the fraction of facilities with unsupported starts increased yearly. Accurate reporting and timely review of antimicrobial data is critical to understanding prescribing trends and practices in hemodialysis facilities.

Postnatal establishment of enteric metabolic, host-microbial and immune homeostasis is the result of precisely timed and tightly regulated developmental and adaptive processes. Here, we show that infection with the invasive enteropathogen Typhimurium results in accelerated maturation of the neonatal epithelium with premature appearance of antimicrobial, metabolic, developmental, and regenerative features of the adult tissue. Using conditional Myd88-deficient mice, we identify the critical contribution of immune cell-derived mediators.

We report a rare case of a missed intracavernous internal carotid artery dissecting aneurysm occurring as a complication of the base of skull fracture with severe brain injury causing acute cavernous sinus syndrome with permanent vision loss. A 31-year-old Myanmar lady had an alleged motor vehicle accident and suffered severe traumatic brain injury with multiple intracranial bleeds, multiple facial bone and base of skull fractures, and limb fractures. At one week post-trauma, she had severe right eye proptosis with vision loss, ophthalmoplegia, chemosis, and high intraocular pressure.
