Objective: We aimed to investigate the frequency and causes of thrombocytosis in patients admitted to the Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology of Elazig Fethi Sekin City Hospital, Elazig, Turkey.
Methods: Between 2019 and 2021, the laboratory parameters of 2,500 patients admitted to the Hematology Department were studied. During this examination, 319 (12.76%) patients were found to have thrombocytosis. Demographic characteristics (age and gender), hematologic parameters (hemoglobin, white blood cells, and platelets), and ultimate diagnoses ot the cases were recorded from their files.
Results: Of these 319 patients with thrombocytosis, 197 (1.8%) were male and 122 (38.2%) were female, and the mean age was 72.0±69.0 (1-216) months. The median platelet count of the patients was 590.43±280.12/μL (450,000-750,000). The most common cause of secondary thrombocytosis was infection, accounting for 37.9% of all patients. Other common causes were sickle cell anemia (21%), iron deficiency anemia (15.4%), colloid tissue disease (6.6%), hemolytic anemia (5.0%), splenectomy (4.5%), and other causes (9.7%).
Conclusion: In our study, infections were the most common cause of thrombocytosis. In addition to infections, sickle cell anemia and iron deficiency anemia should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of thrombocytosis.

Department of Pediatrics, Fukushima Medical University, Fukushima, Japan.
Background: Nonpharmaceutical interventions for coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, during the pandemic altered the epidemiology of respiratory viruses. This study aimed to determine the changes in respiratory viruses among children hospitalized from 2018 to 2023.
Methods: Nasopharyngeal specimens were collected from children aged under 15 years with fever and/or respiratory symptoms admitted to a medical institution in Fukushima Prefecture between January 2018 and December 2023.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a devastating cause of death and disability. Outcomes following TBI have been extensively studied; however, less attention has been given to identifying characteristics of individuals who have a favorable outcome following severe TBI. We conducted a retrospective analysis of a database containing information on TBI patients admitted to a level 1 trauma center between 2015 and 2021.

Background: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a cytokine that predicts clinical outcomes in critically ill patients, including those with sepsis. Elderly patients have blunted and easily dysregulated host responses to infection, which may influence IL-6 kinetics and alter the association between IL-6 levels and clinical outcomes.
Methods: This retrospective observational study included patients aged ≥ 16 years who were admitted to the intensive care unit at Chiba University Hospital.

Background: To explore the advantages of a lateral tibial locking plate combined with Jail screw fixation in the treatment of anterolateral tibial plateau collapse fracture (ATPCF).
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with ATPCFs admitted to our hospital from February 2019 to February 2023. Twenty-six patients were successfully included, including 15 males and 11 females, with an average age of 58.

Background And Aims: Patients with adrenal insufficiency (AI) face elevated risks during various hospitalizations including cardiovascular related admissions. Despite this, limited data exist specifically regarding congestive heart failure (CHF) in the context of AI. This investigation leveraged a comprehensive national database to examine the association between AI and cardiovascular outcomes among patients admitted with CHF.
