Near-infrared (NIR) emitting phosphors are currently receiving considerable attention owing to their high demand in various applications, such as light detection and ranging (LiDAR), short-range communications, security, biosensing and night vision lighting applications. The miniaturization of photonic components demands the integration of thin films into exploitable devices. In this context, NIR emitting ZnAlO:Ce/Nd films of hundreds of nanometer thickness are synthesized using a scalable and cost-efficient approach to screen printing. Cerium co-doping is responsible for the Nd emission in the NIR through energy transfer by exciting the films under UV excitation at around 360 nm. Through the proper design of ink, dense Nd/Ce doped ZnAlO ceramic films were produced using polycrystalline alumina. The use of polycrystalline alumina substrates opens up new opportunities because this ceramic is a cheap and well-known substrate for optoelectronic packaging. During manufacturing, as a direct effect of predominant crystal growth over the polycrystalline alumina substrate, an increase in emission intensity is achieved. The results obtained by X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) serve to determine the oxidation state of Ce. The findings of this study indicate that a higher concentration of Ce promotes NIR emission. This study may contribute to a better understanding of film production processes of films based on the ZnAlO matrix and guide future studies on films for NIR emitters.

This study investigates the fabrication, microstructural characteristics and plasma resistance of Y-Al-Si-O (YAS) glass-ceramics coated on alumina ceramics. YAS frits were initially prepared using a melt-quenching method, then homogenously milled and coated onto alumina ceramics. The melt-coating process was conducted at 1650 °C for 1 h.

X-ray Laue microdiffraction aims to characterize microstructural and mechanical fields in polycrystalline specimens at the sub-micrometre scale with a strain resolution of ∼10. Here, a new and unique Laue microdiffraction setup and alignment procedure is presented, allowing measurements at temperatures as high as 1500 K, with the objective to extend the technique for the study of crystalline phase transitions and associated strain-field evolution that occur at high temperatures. A method is provided to measure the real temperature encountered by the specimen, which can be critical for precise phase-transition studies, as well as a strategy to calibrate the setup geometry to account for the sample and furnace dilation using a standard α-alumina single crystal.

Grain boundary (GB) fracture is a major mechanism of material failure in polycrystalline ceramics. However, the intricate atomic arrangements of GBs have impeded our understanding of the atomistic mechanisms of these processes. In this study, we investigated the atomic-scale crack propagation behavior of an α-AlO ∑13 grain boundary, using a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning TEM.

Thin-films of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have widespread potential applications, especially with the emergence of glass-forming MOFs, which remove the inherent issue of grain boundaries and allow coherent amorphous films to be produced. Herein, it is established that atomic layer deposition (ALD) of zinc oxide lends excellent control over the thickness and localization of resultant polycrystalline and glass zeolitic imidazole framework-62 (ZIF-62) thin-films within tubular α-alumina supports. Through the reduction of the chamber pressure and dose times during zinc oxide deposition, the resultant ZIF-62 films are reduced from 38 µm to 16 µm, while the presence of sporadic ZIF-62 (previously forming as far as 280 µm into the support) is prevented.

Aim: To quantify and compare the metal ions released from different bracket-wire combinations and to assess their cytotoxicity.
Materials And Methods: A total of 360 fabricated sectional fixed orthodontic appliances were divided into 6 groups. The first three groups consisted of stainless-steel brackets with stainless-steel, snickel-titanium (NiTi), and titanium-molybdenum alloy (TMA) archwires, and the other three groups were fabricated using ceramic brackets (polycrystalline alumina) with stainless-steel, NiTi, and TMA archwires.
