Bacteria from the complex are generally considered to be non-pathogenic to the healthy population. However, some of these species may cause serious nosocomial infections in immunocompromised patients; as such, it is essential to diagnose these infections rapidly so that adequate treatment can be initiated. We report here the use of a radiolabeled siderophore, ornibactin (ORNB), for positron emission tomography imaging. We successfully radiolabeled ORNB with gallium-68 with high radiochemical purity and proved that the resulting complex has optimal characteristics. In mice, the complex did not show excessive accumulation in organs and was excreted in the urine. We demonstrated that the [Ga]Ga-ORNB complex accumulates at the site of infection, including pneumonia, in two animal infection models. These results suggest that [Ga]Ga-ORNB is a promising tool for the diagnosis, monitoring, and evaluation of the therapeutic response to complex infection.

Historically considered to be nonenveloped, hepatitis E virus (HEV), an important zoonotic pathogen, has recently been discovered to egress from infected cells as quasi-enveloped virions. These quasi-enveloped virions circulating in the blood are resistant to neutralizing antibodies, thereby facilitating the stealthy spread of infection. Despite abundant evidence of the essential role of the HEV-encoded ORF3 protein in quasi-enveloped virus formation, the underlying mechanism remains unclear.

Transfer learning aims to integrate useful information from multi-source datasets to improve the learning performance of target data. This can be effectively applied in genomics when we learn the gene associations in a target tissue, and data from other tissues can be integrated. However, heavy-tail distribution and outliers are common in genomics data, which poses challenges to the effectiveness of current transfer learning approaches.

Host-pathogen interactions represent a dynamic evolutionary process, wherein both hosts and pathogens continuously develop complex mechanisms to outmaneuver each other. Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease pathogen, has evolved an intricate antigenic variation mechanism to evade the host immune response, enabling its dissemination, persistence, and pathogenicity. Despite the discovery of this mechanism over two decades ago, the precise processes, genetic elements, and proteins involved in this system remain largely unknown.

These may be more pronounced among those perinatally infected. This longitudinal mixed-methods study describes the clinical and psychosocial challenges faced by HIV perinatally infected young mothers in Harare, Zimbabwe to inform tailored support.

The global public health risk posed by Salmonella Kentucky (S. Kentucky) is rising, particularly due to the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes in human and animal populations. This serovar, widespread in Africa, has emerged as a notable cause of non-typhoidal gastroenteritis in humans.
