AI Article Synopsis

  • A new species of L. (Rubiaceae) has been identified and described from the central highlands of Vietnam, based on both physical characteristics and genetic analysis.
  • This species is part of the Spermacoceae tribe, which has around 1000 species globally, with 70-80 species found in Vietnam, and is confirmed to be related to one of the largest genera in this tribe.
  • Morphologically, the new species is distinct from other southeastern Asian species, showing unique traits in leaf shape, growth habits, and floral characteristics, while also sharing some similarities with related species from China.

Article Abstract

A new species of L. (Rubiaceae), B.H. Quang, T.A. Le, K.S. Nguyen & Neupane, is described and illustrated from the central highlands of Vietnam based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence. The new species belongs to the morphologically diverse tribe Spermacoceae (ca. 1000 species) of the family Rubiaceae, which is represented by 70-80 species in Vietnam. The phylogenetic analysis, based on four DNA regions (ITS, ETS, petD, rps 16), confirms the new species' placement within the genus - one of the largest genera in the tribe, comprising ca. 180 species across Asia and the Pacific. is morphologically distinct from all southeastern Asian L. in its set of traits such as leaf type (shape and thickness), growth habit, and floral parts (color of inflorescence axis and the shape of calyx lobes). The new species shows similarities with , , and from China in its herbaceous habit, fleshy ovate leaf blades, and dark purple floral parts, but it is phylogenetically distinct and can be distinguished from them by the following combination of morphological traits: habit with slightly smaller stature (<25 cm), broadly ovate or deltoid stipules with cuspidate apex and entire margin, and ovate or nearly ovate calyx lobes.

Background: The Lihir Islands of Papua New Guinea, located in an area with high burden of malaria and hosting a large mining operation, offer a unique opportunity to study transmission. There, we investigated human and vector factors influencing malaria transmission.

Methods: In 2019, a cross-sectional study was conducted on 2,914 individuals assessing malaria prevalence through rapid diagnostic tests (RDT), microscopy, and quantitative PCR (qPCR).

Projected changes in climate extremes over Tanzania.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Documentation and Publication, Directorate of Knowledge Management, Commission for Science and Technology, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

Understanding projected changes in climate extremes at local and regional scales is critical for reducing society's vulnerability to such extremes, as it helps to devise informed adaptation strategies and contributes to informed decision-making processes. In this paper, we analysed projected changes in climate extremes across regions in Tanzania using outputs of high-resolution regional climate models from the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment program (CORDEX-Africa). The indices analysed here are those recommended by the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI) to characterise climate extremes over different regions.

Proposing Bromo-epi-androsterone (BEA) for perioperative neurocognitive disorders with Interleukin-6 as a druggable target.

Cognitive impairment following surgery is a significant complication, affecting multiple neurocognitive domains. The term "perioperative neurocognitive disorders" (PND) is recommended to encompass this entity. Individuals who develop PND are typically older and have increases in serum and brain pro-inflammatory cytokines notwithstanding the type of surgery undergone.

This study investigates the effects of physical and chemical soil degradation on crop productivity in the Watershed. The watershed was categorized into level, sloping, and steep slope gradients. Within each slope gradient, one cultivated land managed with soil and water conservation and one cultivated land without soil and water conservation were selected.

There are obvious contradictions between the development of plateau mountain urban agglomerations and the protection of ecological environment, with the quality of habitat being closely related to land use changes during urbanization. Based on the land use data of central Yunnan urban agglomeration in 2000, 2010, and 2020, we analyzed the spatio-temporal variations of land use and habitat quality, and used PLUS model and InVEST model to predict the status of land use and habitat quality in 2030 under three scenarios: natural development, urban deve-lopment, and ecological protection. The results showed that the artificial surface area of the study area increased significantly from 2000 to 2020, mainly distributed in the areas with very low and medium topographic gradients, most of which were transformed from the cultivated land in the dam area with slow slope.
