In this work, our new experimental setup has been used to study the ionization and fragmentation of a prebiotic molecule, hydantoin, by electron impact. Scanning of the incident electron energy allows the determination of the appearance thresholds of the cations. The vertical ionization potential was found to be in good agreement with previous data. Dissociation thresholds for the main fragmentation patterns were also measured. In parallel, thanks to quantum chemical calculations, reaction schemes compatible with the experimental results are given.

The interactions of electrons with molecular systems under various conditions are essential to interdisciplinary research fields extending over the fundamental and applied sciences. In particular, investigating electron-induced ionization and dissociation of molecules may shed light on the radiation damage to living cells, the physicochemical processes in interstellar environments, and reaction mechanisms occurring in combustion or plasma. We have, therefore, studied electron-induced ionization and dissociation of the gas phase 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran (DHP), a cyclic ether appearing to be a viable moiety for developing efficient clinical pharmacokinetics and revealing the mechanisms of biofuel combustion.

We probe the separation of ligands from iron tetracarbonyl methyl acrylate (Fe(CO)(CHO) or Fe(CO)MA) induced by the interaction with free electrons. The motivation comes from the possible use of this molecule as a nanofabrication precursor and from the corresponding need to understand its elementary reactions fundamental to the electron-induced deposition. The properties of carbonaceous materials with respect to various applications are enhanced by incorporation of nitrogen-containing moieties like, for instance, amino groups. Therefore, processes that allow the introduction of such functional groups into hydrocarbon compounds are of utmost interest. Previous studies have demonstrated that hydroamination reactions which couple amines to unsaturated sites within hydrocarbon molecules do not only proceed in the presence of suitably tailored catalysts but can also be induced and controlled by electron irradiation.
