The relationship between the volumetric thermodynamic coefficients of liquid metals at the melting point and interatomic bond energy was studied. Using dimensional analysis, we obtained equations that connect cohesive energy with thermodynamic coefficients. The relationships were confirmed by experimental data for alkali, alkaline earth, rare earth, and transition metals. Cohesive energy is proportional to the square root of the ratio of melting point divided by thermal expansivity α. Thermal expansivity does not depend on the atomic size and atomic vibration amplitude. Bulk compressibility β and internal pressure are related to the atomic vibration amplitude by an exponential dependence. Thermal pressure decreases with an increasing atomic size. Fcc and hcp metals with high packing density, as well as alkali metals, have the relationships with the highest coefficient of determination. The contribution of electrons and atomic vibrations to the Grüneisen parameter can be calculated for liquid metals at their melting point.

Electride transition in liquid aluminum under high pressure and high temperature.

Despite the conventional view of liquid aluminum (l-Al) as a simple metal governed by the free-electron model, it exhibits unique bonding characteristics. This study uncovers a gradual transition from free electron to electride behavior in l-Al at high pressure and temperature, forming a type of two-component liquid where atomic and electride states coexist. The proportion of electride increases with pressure and temperature until reaching saturation, leading to notable changes in the pair-correlation function and coordination number of l-Al at saturation pressure.

We present a Bayesian inference-based nonlinear least-squares fitting approach developed to reliably fit challenging, noisy data in an automated and robust manner. The advantages of using Bayesian inference for nonlinear fitting are demonstrated by applying this approach to a set of temperature-dependent film thickness () data collected by ellipsometry for thin films of polystyrene (PS) and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP). The glass transition experimentally presents as a continuous transition in thickness characterized by a change in slope that in thin films with broadened transitions can become particularly subtle and challenging to fit.

Effects of Ring Opening and Chemical Modification on the Properties of Dry and Moist Cellulose─Predictions with Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

Thermoplastic properties in cellulosic materials can be achieved by opening the glucose rings in cellulose and introducing new functional groups. Using molecular dynamics, we simulated amorphous cellulose and eight modified versions under dry and moist conditions. Modifications included ring openings and functionalization with hydroxy, aldehyde, hydroxylamine, and carboxyl groups.

In this paper, we proposed an in-fiber Fabry-Perot temperature sensor which filled with Indium gallium stannum (InGaSn) alloy. By splicing a single-mode fiber axially with hollow-core fibers (HCFs) of varying inner diameters, a cavity of the Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) structure is formed. Assisted by liquid metal with fluidity and high thermal expansivity, subtle temperature fluctuations are converted into variations in the interferometric cavity length which leads to a significant spectral drift.

Nickel orthovanadate is a promising material with potential applications in energy storage and photocatalytic devices. The crystal structure of NiVO at 299 (3) K and 1323 (8) K was studied using X-ray powder diffraction. The sample was a single-phase orthorhombic kagome-staircase-Ni(VO)-type structure (space group Cmca) at both temperatures.
