Reversal Training Discloses Gender Differences in a Spatial Memory Task in Humans.

Over the past few years, spatial memory has been studied using virtual-reality-based tasks. Reversal learning has been widely used in spatial orientation tasks for testing, among other things, new learning and flexibility. By means of a reversal-learning protocol, we assessed spatial memory in men and women. A total of sixty participants (half of them women) performed a task that included two phases: during the acquisition phase, participants were asked to find one or three rewarded positions in the virtual room across ten trials. During the reversal phase, the rewarded boxes were moved to a new position and maintained for four trials. The results showed that men and women differed in the reversal phase, with men outperforming women in high demanding conditions. Dissimilarities in several cognitive abilities between both genders are the base of these differences and are discussed.

How are arbitrary sequences of verbal information retained and manipulated in working memory? Increasing evidence suggests that serial order in verbal WM is spatially coded and that spatial attention is involved in access and retrieval. Based on the idea that brain areas controlling spatial attention are also involved in oculomotor control, we used eye tracking to reveal how the spatial structure of serial order information is accessed in verbal working memory. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most commonly occurring brain disorder, characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau, subsequently leading to neurocognitive decline. 3-Amino-1-propanesulfonic acid (TPS) and its prodrug, currently under clinical trial III, serve as promising therapeutic agents targeting Aβ pathology by specifically preventing monomer-to-oligomer formation. Inspired by the potency of TPS prodrug, we hypothesized that conjugating TPS with human serum albumin (HSA) could enhance brain delivery and synergistically inhibit Aβ aggregation in mild to moderate AD.
