Dating the bacterial tree of life based on ancient symbiosis.

Syst Biol

January 2025

Simon F. S. Li Marine Science Laboratory, School of Life Sciences and State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, Hong Kong SAR.

Obtaining a timescale for bacterial evolution is crucial to understand early life evolution but is difficult owing to the scarcity of bacterial fossils. Here, we introduce multiple new time constraints to calibrate bacterial evolution based on ancient symbiosis. This idea is implemented using a bacterial tree constructed with genes found in the mitochondrial lineages phylogenetically embedded within Proteobacteria.

Pathophysiology, symptoms, outcomes, and evaluation of hyponatremia: comprehension and best clinical practice.

Clin Exp Nephrol

January 2025

Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine, Georgetown University, 4000 Reservoir Rd NW, Washington, DC, 20007, USA.

This review article series on water and electrolyte disorders is based on the 'Electrolyte Winter Seminar' held annually for young nephrologists in Japan. The seminar includes lively discussions based on cases, which are also partly included in this series as self-assessment questions. The first article in this series focuses on pathophysiology, symptoms, outcomes, and evaluation of hyponatremia, a common water and electrolyte disorder in clinical practice.

Improving crop salinity management requires enhanced understanding of salinity responses of leaf and fine-root traits governing resource acquisition, ideally in relation to ion accumulation at intra- or inter-specific levels. We hypothesized that these responses are coupled towards integrated resource conservation for plants under prolonged salt treatment. We tested the hypothesis with a glasshouse experiment on saplings of six contrasting hybrids, subjected to either control or salt treatment (reverse osmosis water versus 3.

Concept-formation and deep disagreements in theoretical and practical reasoning.

Synthese

January 2025

Department of Psychiatry, University of Oxford, Warneford Hospital, Oxford, OX3 7JX UK.

This paper explores the idea that deep disagreements essentially involve disputes about what counts as good reasoning, whether it is theoretical or practical reasoning. My central claim is that deep disagreements involve radically different paradigms of some principle or notion that is constitutively basic to reasoning-I refer to these as "basic concepts". To defend this claim, I show how we can understand deep disagreements by accepting the indeterminacy of concept-formation: concepts are not set in stone but are responsive to human needs, and differences in individuating and ordering concepts lead to clashes in paradigms of reasoning.

Background: Treatment of gingival recessions through surgical approaches is a common periodontal intervention. There is a rise in using biologics in root coverage procedures. As it has been shown that hyaluronic acid (HA) promotes wound healing, this review aimed to assess its efficacy in the treatment of gingival recessions.
