A shorter synthesis of the demethyl(oxy)aaptamine skeleton was developed via oxidative intramolecular cyclization of 1-(2-azidoethyl)-6-methoxyisoquinolin-7-ol followed by dehydrogenation with a hypervalent iodine reagent. This is the first example of oxidative cyclization at the -position of phenol that does not involve spiro-cyclization, resulting in the improved total synthesis of 3-(phenethylamino)demethyl(oxy)aaptamine, a potent anti-dormant mycobacterial agent.

The photocatalytic alkene-migrative chain elongation reaction of 2-phosphinostyrenes with aldehydes under mild conditions in response to blue light was demonstrated. A broad range of aldehydes, both aliphatic and aromatic, participated in this reaction to afford alkene-phosphine oxides in a -selective manner. Mechanistic experiments suggested the formation of benzophospholene-based ylide intermediates via photocatalytic cyclization of phosphinostyrenes followed by solvent-mediated proton transfer under base-free reaction conditions.

Novel tetrahydroisoquinoline and piperidine derivatives were selectively synthesized from substituted indenes or cyclopentenes. The process starts with an oxidative cleavage of the ring olefin bond, which gives reactive diformyl intermediates. By a ring-closing step using chiral (R) or (S) α-methylbenzylamine under a reductive amination protocol facilitated ring formation with ring expansion of the corresponding nitrogen-containing heterocycles.

This work explores the use of a cross-shaped organic framework that is used as a template for the investigation of multi-functionalized chromophores. We report the design and synthesis of a universal cross-shaped building block bearing two bromines and two iodines on its peripheral positions. The template can be synthesized on a gram scale in a five-step reaction comprising an oxidative homo-coupling macro-cyclization.

Heterogeneous photoelectrocatalysis systems have recently seen significant growth in organic transformations, but are limited by the inherent physicochemical properties of electrode materials. To enhance selectivity in these processes, we propose an innovative advancement in the rational design of photoanodes. Specifically, we incorporated cobalt porphyrin co-catalysts with confined Co sites onto bismuth vanadate films as a photoanode.

A dual photoredox/cobalt-catalyzed protocol for chemo-, regio-, diastereo- and enantioselective reductive coupling of 1,1-disubstituted allenes and cyclobutenes through chemo-, regio-, diastereo- and enantioselective oxidative cyclization followed by stereoselective protonation promoted by a chiral phosphine-cobalt complex is presented. Such process represents an unprecedented reaction pathway for cobalt catalysis that enables selective transformation of the less sterically congested alkenes of 1,1-disubstituted allenes with cyclobutenes, incorporating a broad scope of tetrasubstituted alkenes into the cyclobutane scaffolds in up to 86% yield, >98:2 chemo- and regioselectivity, >98:2 dr and >99.5:0.
