This work implements a catalytic S2 glycosylation by employing an amide-functionalized 1-naphthoate platform as a latent glycosyl leaving group. Upon gold-catalyzed activation, the amide group enables the S2 process by directing the attack of the glycosyl acceptor via H-bonding interaction, which results in stereoinversion at the anomeric center. Unique in this approach is that the amide group also enables a novel safeguarding mechanism by trapping oxocarbenium intermediates and, hence, minimizing stereorandom S1 processes. The strategy is applicable to the synthesis of a broad range of glycosides with high to excellent levels of stereoinversion from anomerically pure/enriched glycosyl donors. These reactions are generally high-yielding, and their applications in the synthesis of challenging 1,2--linkage-rich oligosaccharides are demonstrated.

The mammalian heart contains cardiac stem cells throughout life, but it has not been possible to harness or stimulate these cells to repair damaged myocardium in vivo. Assuming physiological relevance of these cells, which have evolved and have been maintained throughout mammalian evolution, we hypothesize that cardiac stem cells may contribute to cardiomyogenesis in an unorthodox manner. Since the intermediate filament protein desmin and the matricellular Secreted Protein Acidic and Rich in Cysteine (SPARC) promote cardiomyogenic differentiation during embryogenesis in a cell-autonomous and paracrine manner, respectively, we focus on their genes and employ mouse embryonic and cardiac stem cell lines as in vitro models to ask whether desmin and SPARC cooperatively influence cardiomyogenesis in cardiac stem and progenitor cells.

Abundant polyphenols in Flos Sophorae Immaturus tea (FSIt) exhibited xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activity. However, the XO inhibitory activity of FSIt was closely related to the processing methods. Herein, organic acids were employed as catalysts for polyphenol conversion during heat treatment and applied to enhance the XO inhibitory activity of FSIt; the potential mechanisms were clarified by polyphenols degradation and conversion analysis, omission experiment, and interaction assay.
