Iron is an essential nutrient that regulates productivity in ~30% of the ocean. Compared with deep (>2000 meter) hydrothermal activity at mid-ocean ridges that provide iron to the ocean's interior, shallow (<500 meter) hydrothermal fluids are likely to influence the surface's ecosystem. However, their effect is unknown. In this work, we show that fluids emitted along the Tonga volcanic arc (South Pacific) have a substantial impact on iron concentrations in the photic layer through vertical diffusion. This enrichment stimulates biological activity, resulting in an extensive patch of chlorophyll (360,000 square kilometers). Diazotroph activity is two to eight times higher and carbon export fluxes are two to three times higher in iron-enriched waters than in adjacent unfertilized waters. Such findings reveal a previously undescribed mechanism of natural iron fertilization in the ocean that fuels regional hotspot sinks for atmospheric CO.

Ferroptosis is a classic type of programmed cell death characterized by iron dependence, which is closely associated with many diseases such as cancer, intestinal ischemic diseases, and nervous system diseases. Transferrin (Tf) is responsible for ferric-ion delivery owing to its natural Fe binding ability and plays a crucial role in ferroptosis. However, Tf is not considered as a classic druggable target for ferroptosis-associated diseases since systemic perturbation of Tf would dramatically disrupt blood iron homeostasis.

Background: Transferrin receptor (TFRC) uptakes iron-loaded transferrin (TF) to acquire iron and regulates tumor development. Nonetheless, the clinical values and the precise functions of TF-TFRC axis in the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) were still undiscovered, especially the impacts of their regional heterogeneous expression.
Methods: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was used to analyze the expression of TFRC in 106 OSCC patients.

This study aims to use superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), specifically magnetite (FeO), to deliver deflazacort (DFZ) and ibuprofen (IBU) to Duchenne muscular dystrophy-affected (DMD) mouse muscles using an external magnetic field. The SPIONs are synthesized by the co-precipitation method, and their surfaces are functionalized with L-cysteine to anchor the drugs, considering that the cysteine on the surface of the SPIONs in the solid state dimerizes to form the cystine molecule, creating the FeO-(Cys)-DFZ and FeO-(Cys)-IBU systems for tests. The FeO nanoparticles (NPs) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and magnetic measurements.

Background: Brain iron dyshomeostasis has been observed in behavioral deficits relevant to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), but it remains unclear whether it is a primary cause or an epiphenomenon of disease.
Method: We assessed the effects of brain iron dyshomeostasis on spatial cognition and cognitive flexibility using the IntelliCage system, recognition memory using novel object recognition tasks and anxiety-like behavior using the open field and elevated plus maze tests. We investigated these phenotypes in a HfexTfr2 mouse model of brain iron dyshomeostasis alone (Iron) or combined with an APP/PS1 model of Alzheimer's Aβ amyloidosis (Aβ+Iron), compared with APP/PS1 mice with Aβ amyloidosis alone (Aβ) or wildtype controls.
