Citizen Science (CS) is research performed by citizens who are not professional scientists in general. SAFECAST was founded in Japan after the Fukushima accident 2011, motivated by distrust in the perceived biassed information by authorities about radiation situation. Measurements of ambient dose rate (ADR) performed by citizens were intended to verify and complement official data using bGeigieNano designed for purpose, recording ADR, GPS coordinates and date/time allowing projection on digital maps. The project expanded internationally, by mid-2022 containing ⁓180 million measurements. CS generates large amount of data as valuable source for science; it has educational value and serves communication between citizens and professionals. Problems consist in quality assurance (QA): citizens who are no trained metrologists are usually little familiar with notions of representativeness, measurement protocols and uncertainty that are the central QA topics. We discuss variability of response of instruments of the same kind under same ambient conditions and isotropy of response under field conditions.

Cell-free systems, which can express an easily detectable output (protein) with a DNA or mRNA template, are promising as foundations of biosensors devoid of cellular constraints. Moreover, by encasing them in membranes such as natural cells to create artificial cells, these systems can avoid the adverse effects of environmental inhibitory molecules. However, the bacterial systems generally used for this purpose do not function well at ambient temperatures.

Coordination polymers (CPs) are promising for direct X-ray detection and imaging owing to higher designability and outstanding stability, however, it remains a challenge to achieve highly X-ray detection performance, particularly both high sensitivity and low detection limit at the same operating voltage. Herein, we construct a new conjugated CP {[Co(BPTTz)(DIPA)] DMA}n (1, BPTTz = 2,5-bis(pyridine-4-yl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole, H2DIPA = 2,5-diiodoterephthalic acid, DMA = N, N'-dimethylacetamide), with multi-channel charge transfer by regulating the linker mediated electronic-state, which reduces carrier losses resulting from recombination or quenching, enhances the efficiency of charge separation and transfer, thus further optimizes X-ray detection performance. The semiconductor prepared based on this strategy achieves record values including the highest mobility-lifetime product (μτ, 8.

In this study we monitored exposure to airborne dust in workers performing various tasks at two biomass-fuelled thermal power plants (27 and 46 MW) over six years. The plants are mainly fuelled by forest wood chips and, to a lesser extent, by agro-food products, with annual consumption of about 300 and 450 kt. We focused on inhalable wood dust because of its potential carcinogenicity to humans.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is an essential regulator of cellular metabolism and redox processes. NAD levels and the dynamics of NAD metabolism change with increasing age but can be modulated via the diet or medication. Because NAD metabolism is complex and its regulation still insufficiently understood, achieving specific outcomes without perturbing delicate balances through targeted pharmacological interventions remains challenging.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently advocated new safe limits of annual exposure for the three pre-dominant pollutants: fine particulate matter (PM2.5), coarse particulate matter (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide; namely 5μg/m3, 15μg/m3 and 10gμ/m3 respectively.
