Capillary isotachophoresis, which involves the separation of charged species under an electric field, has been applied to the rapid determination of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid at 0.04-0.50% concentration levels in corn/soy-based poultry feeds, using conductivity detection. The procedure merely involves a 15 min cold water extraction of the sample and a 15 min analysis after injection of the filtrate into the instrument. Since only charged species migrate and non-ionic species stay virtually at the front of the column, extraordinary selectivity can be achieved. The isotachophoresis method is an order of magnitude faster than the gas chromatographic method reported recently and also provides information on HMB-monomer/dimer ratio in the same run. The sample recoveries exceeded 90% in all concentration ranges studied with coefficients of variation less than +/- 10%.

This study aims to determine the effects of D-methionine (D-Met) isomer and the methionine precursor 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid i (HMBi) supplementation on milk protein synthesis on immortalized bovine mammary epithelial cell (MAC-T). MAC-T cells were seeded using 10-cm dishes and cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium/F12 (DMEM/F12) basic medium. The basic medium of DMEM/F12 was replaced with the lactogenic DMEM/F12 differentiation medium when 90% of MAC-T cells reached confluency.

Background: To determine responses of neonatal intestine to maternal increased consumption of DL-methionine (DLM) or DL-2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid (HMTBA), eighteen primiparous sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) were allocated based on body weight and backfat thickness to the control, DLM and HMTBA groups (n = 6), with the nutritional treatments introduced from postpartum d0 to d14.
Results: The DLM-fed sows showed negative energy balance manifested by lost bodyweight, lower plasma glucose, subdued tricarboxylic acid cycle, and increased plasma lipid metabolites levels. Both villus height and ratio of villus height to crypt depth averaged across the small intestine of piglets were higher in the DLM and HMTBA groups than in the control group.

For this purpose, eighteen cross-bred (Landrace × Yorkshire) primiparous sows were fed a control (CON), DLM or HMTBA diet (n 6 per diet) from 0 to 14 d post-partum. At postnatal day 14, piglets in the HMTBA group had higher body weight (P= 0·02) than those in the CON group, tended (P= 0·07) to be higher than those in the DLM group, and had higher (P< 0·05) mRNA abundance of jejunal fatty acid-binding protein 2, intestinal than those in the CON and DLM groups.
