The broad-spectrum UV filter oxybenzone is toxic to plants at environmentally relevant concentrations. Lysine acetylation (LysAc) is one of the essential post-translational modifications (PTMs) in plant signaling responses. The goal of this study was to uncover the LysAc regulatory mechanism in response to toxic exposures to oxybenzone as a first step in elucidating xenobiotic acclimatory reactions by using the model L. ssp. . A total of 6124 sites on 2497 proteins were acetylated, 63 proteins were differentially abundant, and 162 proteins were differentially acetylated under oxybenzone treatment. Bioinformatics analysis showed that a large number of antioxidant proteins were significantly acetylated under oxybenzone treatment, implying that LysAc alleviated the adverse effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by inducing antioxidant systems and stress-related proteins; the significant changes in acetylation modification of enzymes involved in different branches of carbon metabolism in plants under oxybenzone treatment mean that plants can change the direction of carbon flow allocation by regulating the activities of carbon metabolism-related enzymes. Our results profile the protein LysAc under oxybenzone treatment and propose an adaptive mechanism at the post-translational level of vascular plants in response to pollutants, providing a dataset reference for future related research.

Oxybenzone (BP-3), a common sunscreen ingredient, has been detected in marine ecosystems and shown to be toxic to various marine species, raising environmental concerns. However, its effects on macroalgae remain largely unknown. This study investigated the toxicity of BP-3 on two macroalgae species: Hormosira banksii and Ulva lactuca.

Article Synopsis
  • Parental exposure to synthetic chemicals before conception can significantly impact fertility and reproductive health, necessitating evaluation of these substances in various biological fluids.
  • A new LC-MS/MS method was developed to detect 95 types of xenobiotics in urine, serum, and reproductive fluids, demonstrating high extraction recovery rates and sensitivity.
  • Analysis of a cohort of Australian couples undergoing fertility treatment revealed widespread detection of harmful chemicals, such as PFAS and parabens, suggesting potential risks to fertility and indicating the need for further investigation into their effects on reproductive outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • - Coral reefs are endangered by bleaching from environmental factors like global warming and pollutants, particularly from UV filters in sunscreens, highlighting the need for better risk assessments of these chemicals.
  • - This study focused on the effects of benzophenone-3 (BP-3), a common sunscreen ingredient, on the coral species Acropora tenuis, revealing an LC50 of 3.9 mg/L, indicating a low risk from BP-3 to corals in the environment.
  • - The research employed RNA sequencing to compare gene expression changes caused by BP-3 and heat stress, finding distinct responses, which could help in developing strategies to protect corals from stressors.

Changes in combined toxicity of benzophenone-3 and humic acid on Daphnia magna and zebrafish during chlorination disinfection process.

J Hazard Mater

Key Laboratory of Integrated Regulation and Resource Development on Shallow Lake of Ministry of Education, College of Environment, Hohai University, Nanjing 210098, PR China.

Conventional wastewater treatment methods cannot completely remove the ultraviolet (UV) filters or dissolved organic matter. The transformation characteristics of these substances during chlorination disinfection and the varying species-specific toxicities of their combinations remain unclear. Here, Daphnia magna and zebrafish were exposed to benzophenone-3 (BP-3) and humic acid (HA) before and after chlorination disinfection.
