Crystalline porous materials are recognized as promising proton conductors for the proton exchange membrane (PEM) in fuel cell technology owing to their tunable framework structure. However, it is still a challenging bulk synthesis for real-world applications of these materials. Herein, we report the mechanochemical gram-scale synthesis of two isostructural metal hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (MHOFs) of Co(II) and Ni(II) based on 1-hydroxyethylidenediphosphonic acid (HEDPH) with 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bipy): Co(HEDPH)(2,2'-bipy)·HO () and Ni(HEDPH)(2,2'-bipy)·HO (). monitoring of the mechanochemical synthesis using different synchrotron-based techniques revealed a one-step mechanism - the starting materials are directly converted to the product. With the existence of extensive hydrogen bonds with amphiprotic uncoordinated phosphonate hydroxyl and oxygen atoms, both frameworks exhibited proton conduction in the range of 10 S cm at room temperature under humid conditions. This study demonstrates the potential of green mechanosynthesis for bulk material preparation of framework-based solid-state proton conductors.

Using mechanical force to induce chemical reactions with two-dimensional (2D) materials provides an approach for both understanding mechanochemical processes on the molecular level, and a potential method for using mechanical strain as a means of directing the functionalization of 2D materials. To investigate this, we have designed a modular experimental platform which allows for monitoring of reactions on strained graphene Raman spectroscopy as a function of time. Both the strain present in graphene and the corresponding chemical changes it undergoes in the presence of a reagent can be followed concomitantly.

The influence of stereochemistry on the mechanochemistry rate is studied using a new mechanophore based on a benzopinacol (BP) skeleton. Two sets of BP diastereomers, the meso R,S and the R,R/S,S were isolated, incorporated into the center of a poly(methyl acrylate), and their mechanical activation rate was measured in solution. Under mechanical stress, the central C-C bond in BP is cleaved, providing two independent benzophenone molecules with higher UV-absorption coefficient at 254 nm.

A multimodal spectroscopic approach is proposed to correlate the mechanical and chemical properties of plastic materials in art and design objects, at both surface and subsurface levels, to obtain information about their conservation state and to monitor their degradation. The approach was used to investigate the photo-oxidation of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), a plastic commonly found in many artistic and design applications, using ABS-based LEGO bricks as model samples. The modifications of the chemical and viscoelastic properties of ABS during photoaging were monitored by correlative Brillouin and Raman microspectroscopy (BRaMS), combined with portable and noninvasive broad-range external reflection infrared (IR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry, directly applicable in museums.
