The effect of a single and 2-week administration of ubiquinone-9 on the blood coagulation system and the functional activity of platelets was studied in the experiments in vitro and in vivo on rats. It was shown that a single dose of 150 mg/kg of ubiquinone decreased adhesion and that of 5 mg/kg decreased aggregation of platelets. Both with a single and 2-week drug administration in doses of 5, 50 and 150 mg/kg an insignificant decrease of coagulability was observed.

A single missense mutation at position 159 of coenzyme Q9 (COQ9) (G→A; rs109301586) has been associated with genetic variation in fertility in Holstein cattle, with the A allele associated with higher fertility. COQ9 is involved in the synthesis of coenzyme COQ10, a component of the electron transport system of the mitochondria. Statins may offer protective effects in sepsis through anti-inflammatory, mitochondrial protection and other actions. We thus evaluated the effects of simvastatin on survival, organ and mitochondrial function, tissue and plasma ubiquinone levels and liver transcriptomics in a 3-day rat model of sepsis. Comparisons of rat plasma simvastatin and ubiquinone levels were made against levels sampled in blood from patients with acute lung injury (ALI) enrolled into a trial of statin therapy.

We examined how dietary supplementation of vitamin E protects against liver oxidative damage in rats with water-immersion restraint stress (WIRS). Before WIRS exposure, rats received a normal diet (ND) or vitamin E-supplemented diet (VESD) (500 IU α-tocopherol/kg diet) at a mean dose of 15 g/animal/d for 4 wk. The two diet groups had serum transaminases and lactate dehydrogenase activities and adrenocorticotropic hormone, corticosterone, and glucose levels to a similar extent.
