While medieval and modern embalming practices in Western Europe are attested to historically and bioarcheologically, especially for famous historical figures, there are few recorded occurrences of this type of corpse preparation for a large number of archaeological individuals from the same lineage. Moreover, evidence of such practices mainly concerns adult individuals, whereas traces of child embalming are extremely rare. In 2017, the discovery of a crypt in the chapel of the Château des Milandes (Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, Dordogne, France) revealed a collective burial of the scattered remains of seven adults and five children of the aristocratic Caumont family, who died in the 16th and 17th centuries and whose skeletons all show marks of embalming practices.

Left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy is associated with heart failure, arrhythmia, and sudden cardiac death. The developmental mechanism underpinning noncompaction in the adult heart is still not fully understood, with lack of trabeculae compaction, hypertrabeculation, and loss of proliferation cited as possible causes. To study this, we utilised a mouse model of aberrant Rho kinase (ROCK) signalling in cardiomyocytes, which led to a noncompaction phenotype during embryogenesis, and monitored how this progressed after birth and into adulthood.

Article Synopsis
  • Fabry Disease cardiomyopathy (FDc) and sarcomeric hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) show similar hypertrophic heart features, particularly anomalies of the mitral valve apparatus (AMVA), which were assessed in this study for better diagnosis and understanding of disease progression.
  • The study involved 80 Fabry patients and 40 HCM patients, utilizing cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging to measure various AMVA and compare groups with similar levels of left ventricular hypertrophy.
  • Results indicated that Fabry patients exhibited greater hypertrophy of papillary muscles compared to HCM patients, alongside significant anomalies like apical displacement, supporting the idea that AMVA may serve as early indicators in Fabry disease. *

Background: Superior mesenteric ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) causes barrier dysfunction and facilitates bacterial translocation (BT) in the small intestine, which can even lead to systemic sepsis. Our previous research showed that luminal administration of glucose and its anaerobic glycolytic metabolites exerted cytoprotective effects on epithelial cells and ameliorated I/R-induced BT in the liver and spleen. Notably, the reduction of BT occurs over the whole intestinal tract, not only restricted in the ligated glucose-containing loop.

Background: Tumourigenesis in right-sided and left-sided colons demonstrated distinct features.

Objective: We aimed to characterise the differences between the left-sided and right-sided adenomas (ADs) representing the early stage of colonic tumourigenesis.

Design: Single-cell and spatial transcriptomic datasets were analysed to reveal alterations between right-sided and left-sided colon ADs.
