Introduction: Chronic erosive gastritis (CEG) is closely related to gastric cancer, which requires early diagnosis and intervention. The invasiveness and discomfort of electronic gastroscope have limited its application in the large-scale screening of CEG. Therefore, a simple and noninvasive screening method is needed in the clinic.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to screen potential biomarkers that can identify diseases from the saliva samples of CEG patients using metabolomics.

Methods: Saliva samples from 64 CEG patients and 30 healthy volunteers were collected, and metabolomic analysis was performed using UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS in the positive and negative ion modes. Statistical analysis was performed using both univariate (Student's t-test) and multivariate (orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis) tests. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was conducted to determine significant predictors in the saliva of CEG patients.

Results: By comparing the saliva samples from CEG patients and healthy volunteers, 45 differentially expressed metabolites were identified, of which 37 were up-regulated and 8 were down-regulated. These differential metabolites were related to amino acid, lipid, phenylalanine metabolism, protein digestion and absorption, and mTOR signaling pathway. In the ROC analysis, the AUC values of 7 metabolites were greater than 0.8, among which the AUC values of 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycoro-3-phosphodylcholine and 1-stearoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycoro-3-phospholine (SOPC) were greater than 0.9.

Conclusions: In summary, a total of 45 metabolites were identified in the saliva of CEG patients. Among them, 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycoro-3-phosphorylcholine and 1-stearoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycoro-3-phosphorine (SOPC) might have potential clinical application value.

Background: Patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive early breast cancer with residual invasive disease after neoadjuvant systemic therapy have a high risk of recurrence and death. The primary analysis of KATHERINE, a phase 3, open-label trial, showed that the risk of invasive breast cancer or death was 50% lower with adjuvant trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) than with trastuzumab alone.

Methods: We randomly assigned patients with HER2-positive early breast cancer with residual invasive disease in the breast or axilla after neoadjuvant systemic treatment with taxane-based chemotherapy and trastuzumab to receive T-DM1 or trastuzumab for 14 cycles.

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) use in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is revolutionizing management. Use of CGM in hospital is poised to transform care, however routine use is not currently recommended due to lack of accuracy validation in acute care, including in people with T1D. We aimed to determine real-world CGM accuracy in hospitalized adults with T1D.

Objective: The adoption of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) in inpatient settings in the pediatric population has been slow because of a scarcity of data on their reliability in hospitalized children.

Research Design And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the accuracy of the Dexcom G6 CGM system in pediatric patients with diabetes admitted to our academic children's hospital from March 2018 to September 2023. We cross-referenced the Dexcom Clarity database against an internal database of inpatient admissions to identify all children with CGM data admitted to the hospital.

Article Synopsis
  • Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) are multidrug-resistant bacteria that can spread their resistance genes via mobile genetic elements, complicating infection control efforts.
  • A study in Galway, Ireland involved whole-genome sequencing of CPE samples from patients and wastewater to understand the distribution and characteristics of these organisms and their resistance genes.
  • Findings revealed that most resistance genes were found on plasmids, with specific plasmid types associated with different CPE strains, highlighting the genetic mechanisms facilitating the spread of resistance between humans and the environment.
