Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Shoolini University, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, India.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cognitive decline, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. In Alzheimer's, abnormal Mitochondrial Permeability Transition Pore (mPTP) activity may contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal damage. Withanolide A, a naturally occurring compound derived from Withania somnifera, have shown potential neuroprotective effects in various neurological disorders.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Alzheimer's Center at Lewis Katz School of Medicine, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, USA.

Background: The Neurovascular Unit is a multicellular structure of the CNS known to become dysfunctional in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and cerebral amyloid angiopathy. Amyloidosis disrupts the function of cerebrovascular endothelial cells (cECs) via extrinsic and intrinsic apoptosis, and induction of blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability. Findings in our lab demonstrated that pan-Carbonic Anhydrase inhibitors (CAi's) prevent mitochondria-mediated apoptotic mechanisms in cECs.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Department of Neurology, University of Fukui, Matsuoka, Fukui, Japan.

Background: One of the pathological hallmarks in Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain is neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) composed of highly phosphorylated tau protein. Clinical benefit of traditional Japanese Kampo Yokukansan for dementia patients, including AD was suggested. In this study, we investigated whether yokukansan participates in the degradation of phosphorylated tau and toxic oligomeric species of tau by using cell culture model of tauopathy, M1C cells.

Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, University of Colorado School of Medicine, 12700 E 19th Ave, Mail Stop B168, Aurora, CO 80045, USA.

The gastrointestinal tract is ground zero for the massive and sustained CD4 T cell depletion during acute HIV-1 infection. To date, the molecular mechanisms governing this fundamental pathogenic process remain unclear. HIV-1 infection in the gastrointestinal tract is associated with chronic inflammation due to a disrupted epithelial barrier that results in microbial translocation.

Background: Venetoclax + azacitidine is a frontline treatment for older adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients and a salvage therapy for relapsed/refractory patients who have been treated with intensive chemotherapy. While this is an important treatment option, many patients fail to achieve complete remission and of those that do, majority relapse. Leukemia stem cells (LSCs) are believed to be responsible for AML relapse and can be targeted through oxidative phosphorylation reduction.
