-9-Fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl (Fmoc)- and -tertiary butyl (-Bu)-protected glutamate (L-), bearing a phenanthroline moiety at the side residue, forms 1D supramolecular assemblies via H-bonding as well as undergoing π-stacking interactions to afford crystals or gels that depend on the shape-complementarity of coexisting alcohols, as demonstrated by structural analyses on these assemblies by means of single-crystal X-ray diffractometry and supplemented with small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering data. Moreover, the rheological measurements on the gels help to define a model for when gels and crystals are expected and found. These observations and conclusions highlight an important, but not very appreciated, aspect of solute-solvent interactions within supramolecular assemblies that can allow the constituent-aggregating molecules in some systems to exhibit high selectivity toward the structures of their solvents. The consequences of this selectivity, as demonstrated here by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction data, can lead to self-assembled structures which alter completely the bulk phase properties and morphology of the materials. In that regard, rheological measurements have helped to develop a model to explain when gels and phase-separated mixtures of crystals and solvents are expected.

Precise control over the catenation process in interlocked supramolecular systems remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a system in which a lantern-shaped Pd2L4 cage can dimerize to form two distinct Pd4L8 catenanes with different interlocking degree: a previously described quadruply interlocked double cage motif of D4 symmetry and an unprecedented triply interlocked structure of C2h symmetry. While the former structure features a linear arrangement of four Pd(II) centers, separated by three mechanically linked pockets, the new motif has a staggered shape.

Simulations on an ODE-based model shows that there are many common points between Viedma deracemization and chiral self-assemblies of achiral building blocks towards chiral nanoparticles. Both systems occur in a closed system with energy exchange but no matter exchange with the surroundings and show parallel reversible growth mechanisms which coexist with an irreversible cluster breaking (grinding). The various mechanisms of growth give rise to the formation of polymerization/depolymerization cycles while the consecutive transformation of achiral monomer into chiral cluster results into an indirect enantioselective autocatalysis.

The application of nanotechnology in medical biology has seen a significant rise in recent years because of the introduction of novel tools that include supramolecular systems, complexes, and composites. Dendrimers are one of the remarkable examples of such tools. These spherical, regularly branching structures with enhanced cell compatibility and bioavailability have shown to be an excellent option for gene or drug administration.

Camptothecin (CPT), a chemotherapeutic agent, demonstrates significant potential in cancer therapy. However, as a drug, CPT molecule suffers from poor water solubility, limited bioavailability, and insufficient immune response. Herein, we construct CPT nanofibers (CNF) with a right-handed chiral property via supramolecular self-assembly, which significantly overcomes the solubility barriers associated with bioavailability and improves tumor immune prognosis.

In this work, we investigate the pH-responsive behavior of multidomain peptide (MDP) hydrogels containing histidine. Small-angle X-ray scattering confirmed that MDP nanofibers sequester nonpolar residues into a hydrophobic core surrounded by a shell of hydrophilic residues. MDPs with histidine on the hydrophilic face formed nanofibers at all pH values tested, but the morphology of the fibers was influenced by the protonation state and the location of histidine in the MDP sequence.
