The National Health Service in England has largely relied on a human resources trilogy of policies, procedures and training to improve organisational culture. Evidence from four interventions using this paradigm-disciplinary action, bullying, whistleblowing and recruitment and career progression-confirms research findings that this approach, in isolation, was never likely to be effective. An alternative methodology is proposed, elements of which are beginning to be adopted, which is more likely to be effective.

We investigate the dynamical phases and phase transitions arising in a classical two-dimensional anisotropic XY model under the influence of a periodically driven temporal external magnetic field in the form of a symmetric square wave. We use a combination of finite temperature classical Monte Carlo simulation, implemented within a CPU+GPU paradigm, utilizing local dynamics provided by the Glauber algorithm and a phenomenological equation-of-motion approach based on relaxational dynamics governed by the time-dependent free energy within a mean-field approximation to study the model. We investigate several parameter regimes of the variables (magnetic field, anisotropy, and the external drive frequency) that influence the anisotropic XY system.

The mutually reinforcing dynamics between pain and stress: mechanisms, impacts and management strategies.

Front Pain Res (Lausanne)

November 2024

Global Medical Affairs, Bayer HealthCare LLC, Whippany, NJ, United States.

While distinct, pain and stress share complex biological and psychological mechanisms that-despite their protective functions-can lead to clinically maladaptive changes requiring therapeutic intervention when they recur or persist. Recognized as "worldwide epidemics" of modern life, both conditions significantly affect an individual's quality of life, functioning, and well-being; without timely intervention, they can become chronic, leading to substantial economic costs via healthcare expenses, lost wages, and reduced productivity. Evidence suggests that pain and stress not only feed into but exacerbate each other through a "vicious cycle," driven by overlapping physiological, cognitive, and social mechanisms, indicating mutually reinforcing dynamics between pain and stress.

Recovery of biological signals lost in single-cell batch integration with CellANOVA.

Nat Biotechnol

November 2024

Department of Statistics and Data Science, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA.

Data integration to align cells across batches has become a cornerstone of single-cell data analysis, critically affecting downstream results. Currently, there are no guidelines for when the biological differences between samples are separable from batch effects. Here we show that current paradigms for single-cell data integration remove biologically meaningful variation and introduce distortion.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a cause of profound and irreversible damage, with no effective therapy to promote functional recovery. Photobiomodulation (PBM) may provide a viable therapeutic approach using red or near-infrared light to promote recovery after SCI by mitigating neuroinflammation and preventing neuronal apoptosis. Our current study aimed to optimize PBM dose regimens and develop and validate the efficacy of an invasive PBM delivery paradigm for SCI.

Wearable augmentations (WAs) designed for movement and manipulation, such as exoskeletons and supernumerary robotic limbs, are used to enhance the physical abilities of healthy individuals and substitute or restore lost functionality for impaired individuals. Non-invasive neuro-motor (NM) technologies, including electroencephalography (EEG) and sufrace electromyography (sEMG), promise direct and intuitive communication between the brain and the WA. After presenting a historical perspective, this review proposes a conceptual model for NM-controlled WAs, analyzes key design aspects, such as hardware design, mounting methods, control paradigms, and sensory feedback, that have direct implications on the user experience, and in the long term, on the embodiment of WAs.
