Score-based diffusion models are a class of generative models whose dynamics is described by stochastic differential equations that map noise into data. While recent works have started to lay down a theoretical foundation for these models, a detailed understanding of the role of the diffusion time is still lacking. Current best practice advocates for a large to ensure that the forward dynamics brings the diffusion sufficiently close to a known and simple noise distribution; however, a smaller value of should be preferred for a better approximation of the score-matching objective and higher computational efficiency. Starting from a variational interpretation of diffusion models, in this work we quantify this trade-off and suggest a new method to improve quality and efficiency of both training and sampling, by adopting smaller diffusion times. Indeed, we show how an auxiliary model can be used to bridge the gap between the ideal and the simulated forward dynamics, followed by a standard reverse diffusion process. Empirical results support our analysis; for image data, our method is competitive with regard to the state of the art, according to standard sample quality metrics and log-likelihood.

We here explore confinement-induced assembly of whey protein nanofibrils (PNFs) into microscale fibers using microfocused synchrotron X-ray scattering. Solvent evaporation aligns the PNFs into anisotropic fibers, and the process is followed in situ by scattering experiments within a droplet of PNF dispersion. We find an optimal temperature at which the order parameter of the protein fiber is maximized, suggesting that the degree of order results from a balance between the time scales of the forced alignment and the rotational diffusion of the fibrils.

Enhanced Efficiency of Anionic Guerbet-Type Amino Acid Surfactants.

Langmuir

January 2025

Research Focus Area for Chemical Resource Beneficiation, Catalysis and Synthesis Research Group, North-West University, 11 Hoffman Street, Potchefstroom 2522, South Africa.

This study investigates the surfactant properties and efficiency of linear and Guerbet-type amino acid surfactants. Utilizing a Wilhelmy plate method, we assessed the colloidal efficiency of these surfactants, with the lowest observed critical micelle concentration at 0.046 mmol L, significantly reducing surface tension to as low as 25.

Anisometric plasmonic nanoparticles find applications in various fields, from photocatalysis to biosensing. However, exposure to heat or to specific chemical environments can induce their reshaping, leading to loss of function. Understanding this process is therefore relevant both for the fundamental understanding of such nano-objects and for their practical applications.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common disabling central nervous system diseases affecting young adults. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an essential tool for diagnosing and following up multiple sclerosis. Over the years, many MRI techniques have been developed to improve the sensitivity of MS disease detection.

Amorphization Stabilizes Te-based Aqueous Batteries via Confining Free Water.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Fudan University, Laboratory of Advanced Materials, Shanghai, 200433, Shanghai, CHINA.

Tellurium (Te), with its rich valence states (-2 to +6), could endow aqueous batteries with potentially high specific capacity. However, achieving complete and stable hypervalent Te0/Te4+ electrochemistry in an aqueous environment poses significant challenges, owing to the sluggish reduction kinetics, the easy dissolution of Te4+ species, and a controversial energy storage mechanism. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate an amorphous strategy for robust aqueous TeO2/Te electrochemistry.
