Poloxamers, also known by their trade name, Pluronics, are known to mitigate damage to cellular membranes. However, the mechanism underlying this protection is still unclear. We investigated the effect of poloxamer molar mass, hydrophobicity, and concentration on the mechanical properties of giant unilamellar vesicles, composed of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-glycero-3-phosphocholine, using micropipette aspiration (MPA). Properties including the membrane bending modulus (κ), stretching modulus (), and toughness are reported. We found that poloxamers tend to decrease , with an impact largely dictated by their membrane affinity, i.e., both a high molar mass and less hydrophilic poloxamers depress at lower concentrations. However, a statistically significant effect on κ was not observed. Several poloxamers studied here showed evidence of membrane toughening. Additional pulsed-field gradient NMR measurements provided insight into how polymer binding affinity connects to the trends observed by MPA. This model study provides important insights into how poloxamers interact with lipid membranes to further understanding of how they protect cells from various types of stress. Furthermore, this information may prove useful for the modification of lipid vesicles for other applications, including use in drug delivery or as nanoreactors.

Single crystals that do not obey translational symmetry have been reported in various material systems. In polymers, twisted crystals are typically formed in banded spherulites, while a class of non-flat polymer single crystals (PSCs) has been observed. Herein, we report the formation of scrolled single crystals of biodegradable polymer poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA).

The five-coordinate complex [RuCl(PNP)] () was synthesized from the binuclear [RuCl(-cym)] with a PNP-type ligand (PNP = 3,6-di--butyl-1,8-bis(dipropylphosphino)methyl)-9-carbazole - (Cbzdiphos )H) in a toluene solution, within 20 h at 110 °C, producing a green solid, which was precipitated with a 1/1 mixture of - pentane/HMDSO. The complex was characterized by NMR-H, C, and P{H}, mass spectroscopy-LIFDI, FTIR, UV/vis spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry, as well as a description of the optimized structure by DFT calculation. The reactivity of was investigated in the presence of potassium triethylborohydride (KBEtH, in THF solution of 1.

Chitosan, a biocompatible polysaccharide, finds a wide range of applications, inter alia as an antimicrobial agent, stabilizer of food products, cosmetics, and in the targeted delivery of drugs and stem cells. This work represents a comprehensive review of the properties of chitosan molecule and its aqueous solutions uniquely combining theoretical modeling and experimental results. The emphasis is on physicochemical aspects which were sparsely considered in previous reviews.

In August 2019, Brazil experienced its largest large oil spill, which impacted extensive areas and significantly affected the northeastern region, particularly Pernambuco. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), major oil components, are critical for assessing fish contamination risks. This study presents two sample pretreatment methods for fish samples - ultrasound-enhanced air-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (UE-AA-LLME) for low molar mass PAHs, and matrix solid-phase dispersion for high molar mass PAHs - followed by a Gas-Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) detection.

Cyclic peptides have higher stability and better properties as therapeutic agents than their linear peptide analogues. Consequently, intramolecular click chemistry is becoming an increasingly popular method for the synthesis of cyclic peptides from their isomeric linear peptides. However, assessing the purity of these cyclic peptides by mass spectrometry is a significant challenge, as the linear and cyclic peptides have identical masses.
