We report continuous measurements of the transmission spectrum of a fiber loop mirror interferometer composed of a Panda-type polarization-maintaining (PM) optical fiber during the diffusion of dihydrogen (H) gas into the fiber. Birefringence variation is measured through the wavelength shift of the interferometer spectrum when the PM fiber is inserted into a gas chamber with H concentration from 1.5 to 3.5 vol.% at 75 bar and 70°C. The measurements correlated with simulation results of H diffusion into the fiber lead to a birefringence variation of -4.25 × 10 per mol m of H concentration in the fiber, with a birefringence variation as low as -9.9×10 induced by 0.031 μmol m of H dissolved in the single-mode silica fiber (for 1.5 vol.%). These results highlight a modification of the strain distribution in the PM fiber, induced by H diffusion, leading to a variation of the birefringence that could deteriorate the performances of fiber devices or improve H gas sensors.

In this study, TaO was obliquely deposited on a polymer grating, resulting in a nanostructured thin film (NTF) with pronounced anisotropic optical properties. We measured and compared the principal indices and principal axes orientations of NTFs grown on both a grating and a smooth glass substrate. By adjusting the deposition angle, we observed a significant variation in the columnar angle and principal indices of the NTF on the grating, compared to the NTF on a smooth surface.

Normalization of Retinal Birefringence Scanning Signals.

Sensors (Basel)

Signal amplitudes obtained from retinal scanning depend on numerous factors. Working with polarized light to interrogate the retina, large parts of which are birefringent, is even more prone to artifacts. This article demonstrates the necessity of using normalization when working with retinal birefringence scanning signals in polarization-sensitive ophthalmic instruments.

In the case of waveguide-based devices, once they are fabricated, their optical properties are already determined and cannot be dynamically controlled, which limits their applications in practice. In this paper, an isosceles triangular-coupling structure which consists of an isosceles triangle coupled with a two-bus waveguide is proposed and researched numerically and theoretically. The coupled mode theory (CMT) is introduced to verify the correctness of the simulation results, which are based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD).

In this study, a series of new methoxy ester functionalized core fluorinated, chloro-fluorinated azobenzene derivatives were synthesized. The molecular structures of the azobenzene derivatives (3a-3c and 4a-4c) were confirmed through various analytical methods, with variations in the alkoxy chain length on one end of the aromatic ring. Optical absorption studies of 3a, 3b revealed π-π* transitions around 368-392 nm.

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19104, United States.

Article Synopsis
  • In the presence of a magnetic field, liquid crystal directors can be distorted from their stable state, influenced by the combinations of liquid crystal elasticity and surface anchoring.
  • The research outlines a method to achieve spatially complex distortions by utilizing high-permeability ferromagnetic microstructures embedded in nematic liquid crystals, which create distinct magnetic field patterns.
  • The study includes simulations that illustrate how variations in magnetic field shape affect the liquid crystal director's orientation, enabling the design of customized microstructures for specific liquid crystal patterns.
