Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is widely recognized as a safe and effective intervention for treating severe affective episodes in patients with bipolar disorder. However, it can sometimes precipitate unexpected manic phases in patients treated for a depressive episode, a phenomenon known as ECT-induced mania. Introduction: Most people with bipolar disorder (BD) experience sleep disturbances across mood states and many identify sleep changes before both depressive and manic episodes. Nearly half of all patients have multiple relapses of BD and identifying early warning signs of relapse, such as sleep changes, could benefit both patients and clinicians as a preventive strategy.
Methods: A systematic search of the databases Embase, APA PsychINFO, and MEDLINE was performed to identify studies that investigated the relationship between sleep changes and mood in BD.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a central nervous system condition that is typified by fluctuations in mood, oscillating between depressive and manic, and/or hypomanic episodes. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that strength training may act as a potent protector against behavioral and neurochemical changes induced by BD. A strength training protocol was performed with adult male Wistar rats, and seven days following the conclusion of training, a single ouabain injection was administered.

Although electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is effective for treating depression, schizophrenia, and mania, cognitive adverse effects may limit use. One possible mechanism for these effects includes cholinergic transmission alterations, supporting potential use of cholinesterase inhibitors for prevention and treatment of these cognitive deficits. The objective of this review is to determine efficacy and safety of cholinesterase inhibitors clinically used for dementia in reducing ECT cognitive adverse effects.
