Background: Newborns have a high incidence of nosocomial infection (NI). We conducted a logistic regression to analyze different incubator standards and other risk factors for newborn NI, which could better help clinical choice of incubator standard.
Methods: Newborns with complete necessary clinical data were included. We collected the demographic and incubator data of 76 patients (40 uninfected and 36 infected) at the Heping Hospital Affiliated to Changzhi Medical College. An analysis of variance, Pearson correlation matrix analysis, and logistic regression analysis were conducted to explore the different incubator standards and other risk factors for neonatal hospital infections. In addition, 4 machine-learning algorithms were used to predict neonatal hospital infections.
Results: We found differences in the gestational age, incubator type, paternal age, and maternal age between the 2 groups. The correlation analysis only revealed a correlation between paternal age and maternal age. The logistic regression showed that gestational age [odds ratio (OR)= 0.77574, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.583513-0.996354] and the new standard incubator (OR =0.011639, 95% CI: 0.000958-0.067897) may be protective factors for infant infection during hospitalization. Among the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and decision tree (DT) algorithms, XGBoost had the best performance in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and precision.
Conclusions: We found early gestational age and incubator standards may be risk factors for the NIs of newborns, which might help clinicians to improve the health and safety standards for incubators. XGBoost can be used to predict newborn NIs.

Neonatal sepsis, a severe infection in newborns, remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among preterm infants. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of pathogens responsible for early-onset sepsis (EOS) and late-onset sepsis (LOS), the annual variability of pathogens responsible for each type of infection, and potential trends in their profiles in preterm infants from a tertiary care neonatal intensive care unit over a ten-year period. We analyzed 177 episodes of confirmed bloodstream infection between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2023.

Sepsis is a risk factor associated with increasing neonatal morbidity and mortality, acute lung injury, and chronic lung disease. While stem cell therapy has shown promise in alleviating acute lung injury, its effects are primarily exerted through paracrine mechanisms rather than local engraftment. Accumulating evidence suggests that these paracrine effects are mediated by mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived small extracellular vesicles (sEVs), which play a critical role in immune system modulation and tissue regeneration.

Nanocomposites based on metal nanoparticles (MNP) prepared with mangosteen () peel extract-mediated biosynthesis of Ag/Zn have attracted considerable interest due to their potential for various practical applications. In this study, their role in developing antibacterial protection for rubber cotton gloves is investigated. The process of mangosteen-peel-extract-mediated biosynthesis produced Ag/Zn nanocomposites with respective diameters of 23.

Aim: Comparative assessment of structural changes in cardiomyocyte mitochondria of the right atrial appendage and the mitochondrial respiratory function in peripheral blood leukocytes in a cohort of patients after acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) and with stable chronic heart failure of ischemic etiology with reduced ejection fraction (CHFrEF) or moderately reduced ejection fraction (CHFmrEF) of the left ventricle.
Material And Methods: The study analyzed 40 micrographs of right atrial appendage cardiomyocytes obtained from 12 patients with CHFrEF and CHFmrEF. The study protocol was registered on ClinicalTrials.

Urinary catheters are commonly used in medical practice to drain and monitor urine of patients. However, urinary catheterisation is associated with the risk of developing catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), which can result in life-threatening sepsis that requires antibiotics for treatment. Using the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique, we assembled a multilayer catheter comprising nine quadruple layers (9QL) of alginate, chlorhexidine (CHX), alginate and poly(β-amino ester) (PBAE) built upon an amino-functionalised silicone.
