Simulation and Experiment on the Low-Velocity Impact Response of Flax Fabric Reinforced Composites.

Natural fiber reinforced composites are increasingly used to fabricate structural components prone to suffering low-velocity impacts. The low-velocity impact response of flax fabric reinforced composites under different impact energies is experimentally studied and numerically simulated. A multi-scale finite element analysis strategy for the progressive damage prediction of flax fabric reinforced composites is developed. Micro- and meso-scale analyses are conducted to predict the effective properties of the woven unit cell. Macro-scale analysis is carried out subsequently to predict the impact response of composite laminates using the results of micro- and meso-scale analyses as inputs. Simulation results and experimental results both show that most of the impact energy is absorbed by the specimens when the impact energy is lower than 4 J, and the absorption ratio of impact energy slightly increases with the increase in impact energy. On the contrary, a dramatic decrease occurs in the absorption ratio when the impact energy is 6 J, due to the severe damage to the specimen. In addition, simulation results indicate that matrix shear damage and interlaminar damage are the primary failure modes of composites under high impact energy. The numerical results of impact force, absorbed energy, and damage morphologies on both sides for all specimens show good agreement with the experimental results.

Over recent decades, global warming has led to sustained glacier mass reduction and the formation of glacier lakes dammed by potentially unstable moraines. When such dams break, devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) can occur in high mountain environments with catastrophic effects on populations and infrastructure. To understand the occurrence of GLOFs in space and time, build frequency-magnitude relationships for disaster risk reduction or identify regional links between GLOF frequency and climate warming, comprehensive databases are critically needed.

Acidogenic fermentation of Ulva in a fed-batch reactor system: tubular versus foliose biomass.

The present study proposes a biorefinery of the macroalgae Ulva, focusing on evaluating two different morphologies of the species (foliose and tubular) during acidogenic fermentation in fed-batch reactors. Stage 1 of the study evaluates lyophilised foliose and tubular Ulva, whilst Stage 2 analyses the impact of ulvan extraction on volatile fatty acids yield and changes in carbohydrate availability. Acetic, propionic, and butyric acids were produced from each substrate, with peak concentrations of total VFAs recorded at 2179.

This paper examines the circumstances under which a one-degree-of-freedom approximate system can be employed to predict the dynamics of a cantilever beam comprising an elastic element with a significant mass and a concentrated mass embedded at its end, impacting a moving rigid base. A reference model of the system was constructed using the finite element method, and an approximate lowest-order model was proposed that could be useful in engineering practice for rapidly ascertaining the dynamics of the system, particularly for predicting both periodic and chaotic motions. The number of finite elements in the reference model was determined based on the calculated values of natural frequencies, which were found to correspond to the values of natural frequencies derived from the application of analytical formulas.

The current investigation explores tri-hybrid mediated blood flow through a ciliary annular model, designed to emulate an endoscopic environment. The human circulatory system, driven by the metachronal ciliary waves, is examined in this study to understand how ternary nanoparticles influence wave-like flow dynamics in the presence of interfacial nanolayers. We also analyze the effect of an induced magnetic field on Ag-Cu-/blood flow within the annulus, focusing on thermal radiation, heat sources, buoyancy forces and ciliary motion.
