This paper is devoted to the study of the current density distribution effect on plasma electrolytic oxidation process and resultant coatings on a Zr-1Nb alloy. The influence of the distance between the plates simultaneously placed into an electrolyzer was evaluated to assess the throwing power of the PEO process. The current density on the facing surfaces of the plates decreases when the distance between them shrinks. This current density has a notable impact on the resultant PEO coating in terms of the surface morphology parameters and electrochemically evaluated corrosion resistance. The influence of this effect is low on the stages of anodizing and spark discharges (60-120 s of the PEO), and significantly increases on the stage of microarc discharges (120-360 s of the PEO). The coating obtained with a smaller distance between the plates, while having the same coating thickness as the others, exhibits higher wear resistance. New correlations between the current density, diffusion coefficient, time constant of nucleation and the coating thickness in the middle of the facing samples were established; in addition, a correlation of the coating morphology in this area with the roughness parameters RPc, RSm was shown. This study contributes to the development of optimized PEO processes for the simultaneously coated several devices of complex shape, e.g., orthopedic implants.

Black-goggled tanagers Trichothraupis melanops (Vieillot, 1818) are passerine birds commonly observed in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Argentina and Paraguay. Tanagers are among the passerines with the highest prevalence and density of coccidian parasites, mainly due to their frugivorous feeding habits that favor fecal-oral transmission. In this context, the current study identifies a new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 parasitizing black-goggled tanagers captured in the Itatiaia National Park, a protected area with a high degree of vulnerability in Southeastern Brazil.

We have calculated the magnetically induced current density (MICD) susceptibility at the all-electron density functional theory level for a series of coronoid molecules of increasing size and compared the MICD susceptibilities with those calculated using the pseudo-π (PP) model. The molecules sustain global diatropic magnetically induced ring currents (MIRCs), whereas paratropic MICD vortices mainly appear inside the benzene rings. The computationally cheaper PP calculations were also employed on circum[]coronene molecules showing that the MICD pattern continues to alternate for odd and even when increasing the size of the molecule.

Membrane-assisted direct seawater splitting (DSS) technologies are actively studied as a promising route to produce green hydrogen (H2), whereas the indispensable use of supporting electrolytes that help to extract water and provide electrochemically-accelerated reaction media results in a severe energy penalty, consuming up to 12.5% of energy input when using a typical KOH electrolyte. We bypass this issue by designing a zero-gap electrolyzer configuration based on the integration of cation exchange membrane and bipolar membrane assemblies, which protects stable DSS operation against the precipitates and corrosion in the absence of additional supporting electrolytes.

For silicon-based devices using dielectric oxides doped with rare earth ions, their electroluminescence (EL) performance relies on the sufficient carrier injection. In this work, the atomic GaO layers are inserted within the Er-doped GeO nanofilms fabricated by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Both Ga(CH) and Ga(CH) could realize the ALD growth of GaO onto the as-deposited GeO nanofilm with unaffected deposition rates.
