Background: Promising results with the CHADS-VASc risk score (CVRS) have been reported for the prediction of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). The aim of this study is to consolidate all the data available and examine the association between elevated CVRS and the incidence of CIN in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Scopus for abstracts and full-text articles from inception to May 2022. Studies were included if they evaluated the association between a high CVRS and the incidence of CIN in patients undergoing PCI. Data were integrated using the random-effects, generic inverse variance method of DerSimonian and Laird. Prospero registration: CRD42022334065.

Results: Seven studies from 2016 to 2021 with a total of 7,401 patients were included. In patients undergoing PCI, a high CVRS (≥2: Odds ratio [OR]:2.98, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 2.25-3.94,  < .01, = 1%, ≥3: OR 4.46, 95% CI 2.27-8.78,  < .01, =56% and ≥4: OR:2.75, 95% CI 1.76-4.30,  < .01, = 11%) was significantly associated with an increase incidence for CIN. Subgroup analyses were done in patients with acute coronary syndrome, and association with CIN remained statistically significant (≥2: OR 2.93, 95% CI 2.11-4.07,  < .01, =22%and ≥4: OR:2.24, 95% CI 1.36-3.69,  < .01, = 0%,).

Conclusion: In patients undergoing PCI, an elevated CVRS is associated with an increased risk for CIN. More rigorous studies are needed to clarify this association and to identify strategies to reduce CIN.

Background: The global incidence of infertility is increasing, and infertility has become an important medical and social issue. With the widespread application of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) technology, the mental health problems of patients undergoing this treatment have gradually attracted widespread attention. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among the level of hope, the fertility quality of life and negative emotions of patients who underwent IVF-ET treatment for the first time to provide a scientific basis for subsequent psychological support interventions.

Introduction: Head and neck cancers (HNC) are devastating, thus imposing a negative impact on the appearance of an individual as well as vital activities such as eating, swallowing, speaking, and breathing. Therefore, HNC patients undergo distress, while their caregivers become overburdened. Religion and spirituality can be helpful for patients and their caregivers from diverse cultural backgrounds to cope with cancer.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the major predictive factors associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation(PMV) following cardiac surgery.

Methods: This retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive-analytical study was conducted from September 2021 to March 2022, involving 244 patients who underwent cardiac surgery. PMV was defined as mechanical ventilation for more than 24 h.

Objective: To study the correlation between anti-Müllerian hormone levels and pregnancy outcomes after in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection in women with polycystic ovary syndrome, which remains controversial.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study recruited 4,719 women with infertility and polycystic ovary syndrome aged 20-40 years who underwent treatment at the Reproductive Center of Peking University Third Hospital between February 2017 and June 2023. We divided the participants into three groups according to the 25th and 75th percentile cutoffs of serum anti-Müllerian hormone: low (≤ 4.

Fibrosis in PCLS: comparing TGF-β and fibrotic cocktail.

Respir Res

January 2025

Department for Pulmonary Medicine, Allergology and Clinical Immunology, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland.

Introduction: Fibrotic cocktail (FC) is a combination of pro-fibrotic and pro-inflammatory mediators that induces early fibrotic changes in organotypic lung models. We hypothesised that transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) alone induces a pro-fibrotic effect similar to FC. Our aim was to compare the pro-fibrotic effects of TGF-β1 with FC in human precision-cut lung slices (PCLS).
