Published: September 2023

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a complex disease involving development of the neural retina, ocular circulations, and other organ systems of the premature infant. The external stresses of the ex utero environment also influence the pathophysiology of ROP through interactions among retinal neural, vascular, and glial cells. There is variability among individual infants and presentations of the disease throughout the world, making ROP challenging to study. The methods used include representative animal models, cell culture, and clinical studies. This article describes the impact of maternal-fetal interactions; stresses that the preterm infant experiences; and biologic pathways of interest, including growth factor effects and cell-cell interactions, on the complex pathophysiology of ROP phenotypes in developed and emerging countries.

Extreme prematurity involves a series of complications that a multidisciplinary team should manage. Taking into account the risks related to premature newborns, such as maternal-fetal infections, intrauterine growth restriction, and certain comorbidities associated with young gestational age, our objective is to highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary team in approaching cases with an unfavorable prognosis. This is a case report of an extremely preterm newborn who came from a high-risk pregnancy and needed long-term hospitalization in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and mechanical ventilation.

Effect and factors associated with reactivation after intravitreal conbercept or aflibercept in retinopathy of prematurity.

Eur J Med Res

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Zhujiang Hospital, Southern Medical University, No. 253, Gongye Avenue Middle, Guangzhou, 510282, Guangdong, China.

Background: To evaluate the effect and factors associated with the reactivation of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) after intravitreal conbercept or aflibercept.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 176 eyes diagnosed with ROP and treated with anti-VEGF therapy between January 2018 and September 2022. The rate of reactivation and complications were assessed during the follow-up period.

Background: The aim of the study was to investigate the quantitative differences between severe stage 3 and stage 4A retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) by evaluating the pre-treatment fundus photographs.

Methods: Thirty-three eyes with clinical diagnosed as severe stage 3 were classified as severe stage 3 group. Twenty-two eyes with retinal detachment without foveal involvement were classified as stage 4A group.

Background: To establish an objective method for assessing plus disease severity in retinopathy of prematurity.

Methods: Six images of plus diseases that were color-coded according to severity and published in the International Classification of Retinopathy of Prematurity, Third Edition (ICROP3) were analyzed. These images were individually processed, and the best-fit curve and vessel course in zone I were obtained using ImageJ software.

Purpose: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) stage is defined by the visual appearance of the vascular-avascular border, which reflects a spectrum of pathologic neurovascular tissue (NVT). Previous work demonstrated that the thickness of the ridge lesion, measured using OCT, corresponds to higher clinical diagnosis of stage. This study evaluates whether the volume of anomalous NVT (ANVTV), defined as abnormal tissue protruding from the regular contour of the retina, can be measured automatically using deep learning to develop quantitative OCT-based biomarkers in ROP.
