We report on a bulk thulium laser operating on the H → H transition with pure upconversion pumping at 1064 nm by an ytterbium fiber laser (addressing the F → F excited-state absorption (ESA) transition of Tm ions) generating 433 mW at 2291 nm with a slope efficiency of 7.4% / 33.2% vs. the incident / absorbed pump power, respectively, and linear laser polarization representing the highest output power ever extracted from any bulk 2.3 µm thulium laser with upconversion pumping. As a gain material, a Tm-doped potassium lutetium double tungstate crystal is employed. The polarized ESA spectra of this material in the near-infrared are measured by the pump-probe method. The possible benefits of dual-wavelength pumping at 0.79 and 1.06 µm are also explored, indicating a positive effect of co-pumping at 0.79 µm on reducing the threshold pump power for upconversion pumping.

Multiphoton upconversion lasing in scattering gain media has attracted considerable attention in recent years. LAPONITE® is a scattering medium consisting of 2-D nano-discs that can be dispersed as a transparent solution in aqueous media and forms a gel at high concentration. In this paper, we demonstrate two-photon pumped upconversion regular lasing along forward and backward directions as well as random lasing along all other directions.

Article Synopsis
  • Photonic-integrated circuits using erbium-doped thin film lithium niobate on insulator are gaining interest for their potential in waveguide amplifiers and microlasers.
  • A low-loss wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) was developed, operating at the relevant wavelengths for erbium ions (∼1480 nm for pumping and 1530-1560 nm for emission) with insertion losses below 0.7 dB and over a bandwidth of more than 20 nm.
  • The study also includes visualizing the multimode interference pattern and demonstrates that the device's spectral characteristics can be adjusted through design changes.

Exploring lanthanide light upconversion (UC) has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance the near-infrared (NIR) responsive region of silicon solar cells (SSCs). However, its practical application under normal sunlight conditions has been hindered by the narrow NIR excitation bandwidth and the low UC efficiency of conventional materials. Here, we report the design of an efficient multiband UC system based on Ln/Yb-doped core-shell upconversion nanoparticles (Ln/Yb-UCNPs, Ln= Ho, Er, Tm).
