In this research, oat resistant starch (ORS) was prepared by autoclaving-retrogradation cycle (ORS-A), enzymatic hydrolysis (ORS-B), and ultrasound combined enzymatic hydrolysis (ORS-C). Differences in their structural features, physicochemical properties and digestive properties were studied. Results of particle size distribution, XRD, DSC, FTIR, SEM and in vitro digestion showed that ORS-C was a B + C-crystal, and ORS-C had a larger particle size, the smallest span value, the highest relative crystallinity, the most ordered and stable double helix structure, the roughest surface shape and strongest digestion resistance compared to ORS-A and ORS-B. Correlation analysis revealed that the digestion resistance of ORS-C was strongly positively correlated with RS content, amylose content, relative crystallinity and absorption peak intensity ratio of 1047/1022 cm (R), and weakly positively correlated with average particle size. These results provided theoretical support for the application of ORS-C with strong digestion resistance prepared by ultrasound combined enzymatic hydrolysis in the low GI food application.

L-Threonine-Derived Biodegradable Polyurethane Nanoparticles for Sustained Carboplatin Release.

Pharmaceutics

December 2024

Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, Pusan National University, Busan 46241, Republic of Korea.

The use of polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) in drug delivery systems offers the advantages of enhancing drug efficacy and minimizing side effects; In this study, L-threonine polyurethane (LTPU) NPs have been fabricated by water-in-oil-in-water emulsion and solvent evaporation using biodegradable and biocompatible LTPU. This polymer was pre-synthesized through the use of an amino acid-based chain extender, desaminotyrosyl L-threonine hexyl ester (DLTHE), where urethane bonds are formed by poly(lactic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic acid) (PLA-PEG-PLA) triblock copolymer and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). LTPU is designed to be degraded by hydrolysis and enzymatic activity due to the presence of ester bonds and peptide bonds within the polymer backbone.

A variety of phytochemicals from different plants are collected by bees into bee pollen granules. This research focused on evaluating the effects of lactic acid fermentation and enzymatic hydrolysis on the antibacterial activity of bee pollen and its interaction with antibiotics. There is limited knowledge regarding the interactions between treated bee pollen extracts and antibiotics, and this study contributes to the field by providing new insights into the antibacterial activity of pollen subjected to eight distinct treatment methods.

Effects of Multiple Treatments of Formic Acid on the Chemical Properties and Structural Features of Bamboo Powder.

Molecules

January 2025

Jiangsu Co-Innovation Center of Efficient Processing and Utilization of Forest Resources, Nanjing Forestry University, Longpan Road 159, Nanjing 210037, China.

Under mild conditions, formic acid effectively separates the components of lignocellulose, removing the majority of the hemicellulose and lignin from the cellulose. However, it has not yet been determined if multiple treatments with fresh formic acid may totally remove hemicellulose and lignin. In this study, fresh formic acid was used to repeatedly pretreat the bamboo powder, and the effect of multiple treatments on the physicochemical structure of the bamboo powder was investigated using changes in fractions, enzymatic hydrolysis, hydrophilicity, cellulose crystallinity, and lignin structure.

Pretreatment of Palm Kernel Cake by Enzyme-Bacteria and Its Effects on Growth Performance in Broilers.

Animals (Basel)

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition and Feeding, College of Animal Science and Technology, China Agricultural University, Beijing 100193, China.

This study aimed to improve palm kernel cake by reducing anti-nutritional factors with enzymes and enhancing its nutritional value through microbial fermentation. It also examined the effects of these treatments on palm kernel cake in broiler chicken diets. Palm kernel cake was hydrolyzed using xylanase and mannanase under various conditions.
