Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a second-order nonlinear optical process that is not allowed in media with inversion symmetry. However, due to the broken symmetry at the surface, surface SHG still occurs, but is generally weak. We experimentally investigate the surface SHG in periodic stacks of alternating, subwavelength dielectric layers, which have a large number of surfaces, thus enhancing surface SHG considerably. To this end, multilayer stacks of SiO/TiO were grown by Plasma Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition (PEALD) on fused silica substrates. With this technique, individual layers of a thickness of less than 2 nm can be fabricated. We experimentally show that under large angles of incidence (> 20 degrees) there is substantial SHG, well beyond the level, which can be observed from simple interfaces. We perform this experiment for samples with different periods and thicknesses of SiO/TiO and our results are in agreement with theoretical calculations.
By using in situ optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurement, dynamical changing of polar molecular orientations caused by mechanical rubbing of polyimide triboelectric generators is observed. The polar orientational order is enhanced during rubbing, which relaxes with the time constant τ = 7.1 s.
Quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) offer unique advantages in enhancing nonlinear optical processes and advancing the development of active optical devices. Here, the tunable robust quasi-BICs resonances are experimentally achieved through the engineering of multiple-hole Si-metasurface. Notably, the quasi-BICs mode exhibits flat bands with minimal dispersion at a wide range of incident angles, as demonstrated by the angle-resolved spectroscopy measurements.
We study numerically and experimentally the second-harmonic generation (SHG) from rectangular metagratings of V-shaped gold nanoantennas. We show that by carefully engineering the array pitch to steer the diffraction orders toward the single antenna emission, the extracted signal is maximized. This enhancement is attributed to the angular overlap between the radiation pattern and array factor and is comparable to the improvement yielded by the coupling of surface lattice resonances (SLRs) with local modes.
The linear and nonlinear optical properties of metallic nanoparticles have attracted considerable experimental and theoretical research interest. To date, most researchers have focused primarily on exploiting their plasmon excitation enhanced near-field and far-field responses and related applications in sensing, imaging, energy harvesting, conversion, and storage. Among numerous plasmonic structures, nanoparticle dimers, being a structurally simple and easy-to-prepare system, hold significant importance in the field of nanoplasmonics.
