The energy flow of light represents a natural way of investigating complex light fields with respect to their applicability. With the generation of a three-dimensional Skyrmionic Hopfion structure in light, which is a topological 3D field configuration with particle-like nature, we paved the way to employ optical, topological constructs. In this work, we present an analysis of the transverse energy flow in the optical Skyrmionic Hopfion, showing the transfer of the topological properties to the mechanical attributes such as the optical angular momentum (OAM). Our findings thus prepare topological structures to be applied in optical traps and data storage or communication.

Airborne insects generate a leading edge vortex when they flap their wings. This coherent vortex is a low-pressure region that enhances the lift of flapping wings compared to fixed wings. Insect wings are thin membranes strengthened by a system of veins that does not allow large wing deformations.

Background: Previous studies have shown that in-beam magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to visualize a proton beam during the irradiation of liquid-filled phantoms. The beam energy- and current-dependent local image contrast observed in water was identified to be predominantly caused by beam-induced buoyant convection and associated flow effects. Besides this flow dependency, the MR signal change was found to be characterized by a change in the relaxation time of water, hinting at a radiochemical contribution, which was hypothesized to lie in oxygen depletion-evoked relaxation time lengthening.

We study properties of a light field at the tight focus of the superposition of two different-order cylindrical vector beams (CVBs). In the source plane, this superposition has a polarization singularity index amounting to the half-sum of the numbers of two constituent CVBs, while having neither spin angular momentum (SAM) nor transverse energy flow. We show that if the constituent CVBs have different-parity numbers, in the focal plane there occur areas that have opposite-sign longitudinal SAM projections, alongside areas of opposite-handed energy flows rotating on closed paths (clockwise and anticlockwise).
