An 'oasis' signifies a refugium of safety, recovery, relaxation, fertility, and productivity in an inhospitable desert, a sweet spot in a barren landscape where life-giving water spills forth from the Earth. Remarkable mythological congruencies exist across dryland cultures worldwide where oases or 'arid-land springs' occur. In many places they also provide specialised habitats for an extraordinary array of endemic organisms. To inform their management, and maintain their integrity, it is essential to understand the hydrogeology of aquifers and springs. Gravity-fed vs artesian aquifers; actively recharged vs fossil aquifers, and sources of geothermal activity are important concepts presented here. There consequences for oases of sustainable and unsustainable groundwater extraction, and other examples of effective conservation management. Oases are archetypes for human consciousness, habitats that deserve protection and conservation, and a lingua franca for multicultural values and scientific exchange. We represent an international Fellowship of the Spring seeking to encompass and facilitate the stewardship of oases and aquifers through improved knowledge, outreach, and governance.

Background And Objectives: The pharmacokinetics (PK) of piperacillin/tazobactam (PIP/TAZ) is highly variable across different patient populations and there are controversies regarding non-linear elimination as well as the fraction unbound of PIP (f). This has led to a plethora of subgroup-specific models, increasing the risk of misusing published models when optimising dosing regimens. In this study, we aimed to develop a single model to simultaneously describe the PK of PIP/TAZ in diverse patient populations and evaluate the current dosing recommendations by predicting the PK/pharmacodynamics (PD) target attainment throughout life.

Subterranean estuaries (STEs) are critical ecosystems at the interface of meteoric groundwater and subsurface seawater that are threatened by sea level rise. To characterize the influence of tides and waves on the STE microbial community, we collected porewater samples from a high-energy beach STE at Stinson Beach, California, USA, over the two-week neap-spring tidal transition during both a wet and dry season. The microbial community, analyzed by 16S rRNA gene (V4) amplicon sequencing, clustered according to consistent physicochemical features found within STEs.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate a lifestyle intervention implemented into routine antenatal care to optimize gestational weight gain (GWG) and outcomes using the Reach, Efficacy, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework.
Methods: This study was an embedded pragmatic behavioral intervention delivered by a health coach and supported by a physician over five sessions for women with a prepregnancy BMI between 25 and 43 kg/m who were <23 weeks' gestation in an Australian maternity service. Both intervention and standard care received routine antenatal care.
