Purpose: This study aims to investigate the safety and efficacy of our novel technique of single-port endoscopy-assisted thyroidectomy via cervical gas-insufflation approach (SPEAT, also called the Huang procedure) in the treatment of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC).

Materials And Methods: We perform a retrospective comparative study from a prospectively maintained database. A cohort of 82 patients with PTC who underwent total thyroidectomy and central neck dissection were included. Of these patients, 48 underwent SPEAT and 34 underwent conventional open thyroidectomy (COT). The differences in surgical outcome and oncological completeness were compared.

Results: Compared with the COT group, the SPEAT group had obviously shorter incision (P < 0.001), less postoperative pain (P = 0.036), better cosmetic satisfaction (P = 0.001)and slightly longer operating time (P = 0.041). In intraoperative bleeding, postoperative drainage, postoperative hospital stay, surgical complications, number of dissected or positive lymph nodes per patient, and postoperative non-stimulated or stimulated thyroglobulin levels, there were no significant differences.

Conclusions: SPEAT (the Huang procedure) is a minimally invasive, safe and oncologically complete surgical option for PTC in selected patients.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in female patients. In recent years, more and more studies have focused on how to improve the appearance and the quality of life for patients. This study aimed to compare the oncologic safety, aesthetic results, and upper extremity function between single-port insufflation endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy (SIE-NSM) and conventional open mastectomy (C-OM) in early-stage breast cancer treatment.

Introduction: Conventional open thyroidectomy (COT) has been the most common approach for thyroidectomy, with a long incision in the neck, a portion of the body prominently exposed. As the morbidity of thyroid surgery has decreased to become minimal, cosmetic outcomes have emerged as increasingly important, motivating surgeons to develop alternative approaches.

Aim: To describe our technique of minimal transcervical access single-port endoscopy-assisted thyroidectomy (Huang's procedure - HP) and to compare the results with those of COT.

Article Synopsis
  • MABS (Minimal Access Breast Surgery) like EABS (Endoscopic Assisted Breast Surgery) and RABS (Robotic Assisted Breast Surgery) is gaining popularity for treating breast cancer due to its smaller incisions and reduced scarring compared to traditional methods.
  • A study on 824 patients revealed that from 2011 to 2020, MABS procedures increased significantly, with similar outcomes to conventional breast surgery in terms of operation time, surgical margins, and recurrence rates.
  • While R-NSM (Robotic Assisted Nipple Sparing Mastectomy) was the most expensive option, MABS generally maintained a comparable safety profile to conventional surgery, making it a viable choice for breast cancer patients.
