Objective: This study endeavored to assess the lipid profile and atherogenic lipid indexes in children with transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) and to compare them with matched healthy children.

Method: The study group consisted of a total of 72 TDT patients aged 3 to14 years, while the control group had 83 age- and sex-matched healthy children. The fasting lipid profile and lipid indexes were estimated and the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), Castelli's risk indexes I and II, atherogenic coefficient were calculated and compared between the two groups.

Result: Compared to the control group, the mean LDL, HDL and cholesterol levels were significantly lower among the case group (p-value < 0.001). The mean VLDL and triglycerides were significantly higher in the case group (p-value < 0.001). Lipid indexes, including the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), Castelli's risk indexes I and II and atherogenic coefficients were significantly higher in TDT children.

Conclusion: Dyslipidemia and increased risk of atherosclerosis were found in TDT children, as they had elevated atherogenic lipid indexes. Our study underlines the importance of the routine use of these indexes in TDT children. Future studies should focus on lipid indexes in this high-lipid group of children so that preventive strategies can be planned accordingly.

Background: Mitochondria-driven oxidative/redox stress and inflammation play a major role in chronic kidney disease (CKD) pathophysiology. Compounds targeting mitochondrial metabolism may improve mitochondrial function, inflammation, and redox stress; however, there is limited evidence of their efficacy in CKD.

Methods: We conducted a pilot randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial comparing the effects of 1200 mg/day of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) or 1000 mg/day of nicotinamide riboside (NR) supplementation to placebo in 25 people with moderate-to-severe CKD (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] <60mL/min/1.

Laboratorio de Investigación en Salud de Precisión, Departamento de Procesos Diagnósticos y Evaluación, Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud, Universidad Católica de Temuco, Temuco 4780000, Chile.

Frailty is a common condition among older individuals and is associated with increased vulnerability to adverse health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the impact of viral infections on frail populations. The present work aimed to determine frailty, functional and cognitive status, and clinical analysis of older persons in a long-term care facility in Chile, before and following the outbreak of COVID-19.

Objectives: An efficient approach to monitor the risks associated with chronic diseases is to use a dietary diversity score (DDS). To our knowledge, there has been no study conducted on the correlation between DDS and cardiovascular risk factors in individuals with diabetes. Hence, the objective of this study is to ascertain the correlation between these traits.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has become one of the most prevalent chronic liver diseases worldwide. The serum uric acid-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) has been recognized as a novel marker for metabolic diseases, including MASLD. However, all previous studies were performed in adults.
