Introduction: Values clarification is a structured, reflective process individuals engage in to better understand their own beliefs and priorities. We designed a workshop on values clarification to help preclerkship medical students anticipate and manage potential conflicts between their personal values and professional expectations.

Methods: We assigned participating students a values clarification exercise as prework. The 2-hour workshop included introductory remarks, a presentation by two physicians on personal ethical challenges they had faced, and faculty-facilitated small groups. In the small groups, students discussed moral discomfort in the context of various health care scenarios. Students were invited to complete an optional postworkshop survey with Likert-scale and short-answer questions. We analyzed the qualitative data and formulated 10 emerging themes.

Results: Thirty-eight of 180 participating students (21%) returned the survey. Of these, 30 (79%) agreed the workshop helped them appreciate that their values might come into conflict with professional obligations, 26 (68%) agreed they would be able to apply what they learned to future scenarios, and 30 (79%) agreed the workshop helped them understand their colleagues' values. The most prominent themes identified were that students found the physician panel especially meaningful and that the workshop helped students examine their own values and prepared them to better understand their future patients' values.

Discussion: Our workshop is unique in that it does not focus on a single area in health care but addresses moral discomfort broadly. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first values clarification curricular initiative developed for preclerkship medical students.

Department of Bioethics & Health Humanities, University Medical Center Utrecht, Utrecht University, Universiteitsweg 100, 3584 CG Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Background: Utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in clinical settings may offer significant benefits. A roadblock to the responsible implementation of medical AI is the remaining uncertainty regarding requirements for AI users at the bedside. An overview of the academic literature on human requirements for the adequate use of AI in clinical settings is therefore of significant value.

Objective: We aimed to investigate the effects of Tongluo Zhitong formula on synovial fibroblast proliferation in human knee osteoarthritis (KOA).

Methods: Discarded synovial tissue collected from patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty at our hospital was digested with type I collagenase. Primary culture was performed on three to four generations of fibroblasts, which were treated with high, medium, and low concentrations of Tongluo Zhitong formula.

Background: To ensure appropriate care for the individual older adult, an ideal treatment should align with patients' values. However, healthcare professionals struggle with how to elucidate patient values effectively. To offer guidance to healthcare professionals, we performed a scoping review, thereby mapping and categorizing instruments specifically developed to elucidate values of older adults in clinical practice.

Evaluating export vulnerability through import demand elasticity in carbon border adjustment contexts: a focus on Türkiye.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

January 2025

Department of International Trade and Business, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Inonu University, 44000, Malatya, Turkey.

Import demand elasticity (IDE) is a critical metric often employed to guide government decisions regarding tariffs and non-tariff barriers, ensuring that foreign trade remains uninterrupted while optimizing tax revenues. This study, however, leverages IDE to assess the impact of the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) on Türkiye's decarbonization process. Specifically, the research analyzed the total export quantities and unit prices of four product groups-cement, fertilizers, and inorganic chemicals, steel and iron, and aluminum-exported from Türkiye to the European Union-27 countries under the CBAM framework between 2002 and 2021.

The juice processing industry offers several benefits, including promoting health and wellness through the delivery of beverages rich in nutrients. Nonetheless, the industry encounters significant challenges regarding new technologies for processing and preservation given that they can be costly and labor-intensive. In this study, magnetic Janus silica (SiO) nanoparticle which offers multifunctionality and high stability was synthesized and subsequently immobilized with a protease mutant T70I (T70I@MSNs) to serve as a clarifying agent in juice.
