Composites of polyaniline (PANI) and Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH, were synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of MOF templates with the MOF content in the resulting materials (78.2 and 86.7 wt %, respectively) close to the theoretical value (91.5 wt %). Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that the morphology of the composites was set by the morphology of the MOFs, whose structure was mostly preserved after the synthesis, based on the X-ray diffraction data. Vibrational and NMR spectroscopies pointed out that MOFs participate in the protonation of PANI and conducting polymer chains were grafted to amino groups of UiO-66-NH. Unlike PANI-UiO-66, cyclic voltammograms of PANI-UiO-66-NH showed a well-resolved redox peak at around ≈0 V, pointing at the pseudocapacitive behavior. The gravimetric capacitance of PANI-UiO-66-NH, normalized per mass of the active material, was also found to be higher compared to that of pristine PANI (79.8 and 50.5 F g, respectively, at 5 mV s). The introduction of MOFs into the composites with PANI significantly improved the cycling stability of the materials over 1000 cycles compared to the pristine conducting polymer, with the residual gravimetric capacitance being ≥100 and 77%, respectively. Thus, the electrochemical performance of the prepared PANI-MOF composites makes them attractive materials for application in energy storage.

Nanozyme-based sensors for detecting ascorbic acid (AA) generally depend on the reducibility of the analyte. However, these sensors are susceptible to interference from reducing substances in food. Herein, a novel fluorescent sensor for AA detection was developed based on inhibiting the phosphatase-like activity of a Zr-based metal-organic framework (Zr-CAU-28).

Converting CO2 to high-value fine chemicals represents one of the most promising approaches to combat global warming and subsequently achieve a sustainable carbon cycle. Herein, we contribute an organoboron functionalized ultra-thin metal-organic nanosheet (MON), termed TCPB-Zr-NS, featuring an abundance of exposed Lewis acidic B and formate sites, which can effectively promote CO2 conversion upon the addition of Lewis basic o-phenylenediamines. Compared with the prototypical 3D analogue TCPB-Zr-3D, the resultant TCPB-Zr-NS showcases dramatically improved catalytic activity for the cyclization of o-phenylenediamine as a result of the highly exposed active sites and efficient substrates/products diffusion.

Exhaled breath contains trace levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can reveal information about metabolic processes or pathogens in the body. These molecules can be used for medical diagnosis, but capturing and accurately measuring them is a significant challenge in chemical separations. A highly selective nanoporous sorbent can be used to capture target molecules from a breath sample and preconcentrate them for use in a detector.

Neuroprosthetics equipped with artificial synapses hold promise to address some most intricate medical problems, such as human sensory disorders. Yet, it is necessitated and of paramount importance for neuroprosthetics to be able to differentiate significant and insignificant signals. Here, we present an information-filterable artificial retina system that integrates artificial synapses with a signal-integration device for signal perception and processing with attention.

The formation and growth of lithium dendrites is an ever-present and urgent problem in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). At the same time, the low melting point of commercial polyolefin separators may lead to safety issues during application. On this basis, in this work, poly (m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA)/Zr-based metal-organic framework (NH-UiO-66) composite separator was prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS).
